I think one of the biggest problems is people think that riders want to be on the roads, when the reality is as you said, none of us want to, but sometimes there's no choice. They have some superiority complex. An attitude they take where they think "horses shouldn't be on road", but we have as much right as they do to use them. Even with changes to the highway code that makes them legally more responsible, and gives vunerable road users right of way, some drivers still don't care. They're just impatient and can't wait a couple of minutes until its safe to pass 😔

In early June when leading our 6 year old granddaughter along the narrow grass verge that leads to a byway, a "boy racer" came by and deliberately blasted the horn as they went to try and spook our pony (with a young child on board). Fortunately, the pony is relatively good in traffic and there were two of us (one leading and one walking beside) but the fact that this a**ehole was prepared to behave like that is indicative of the mentality of a minority of people when it comes to horses.

Honestly what your friend said is 100% correct. A tabard or quarter sheet that shows you are filming makes such a difference. I hacked in the "polite" stuff for ages, couldn't believe the difference riding in a rider eye "filming" tabard made. I now have a young horse so bought a caution young horse tabard but got one of ridereyes quarter sheets that have the camera symbol on them. Worth a try!

I found myself waving and thanking the drivers that slowed down. Here in Nova Scotia 95% of the drivers go by as fast as they can. I’ve stopped riding on any paved roads now.

@martyp21386 ай бұрын
Couldn't agree more, riding on the roads is only for necessity than because you want to be using them. Especially on country roads where you have blind corners etc, the standard of driving is scary these days and most (not all) have little patience or give very little thought of others behind the wheel. Always good to give a wave to those who do slow down and give plenty of space.

In my opinion horse have more right of way on the roads because before cars we we’re getting to and from on horses in my driving lesson my old instructor told me to just drive past some horses but I pulled over till they passed me (I failed because of that) I now have a new instructor because I reported the previous one

just the other week me and my friends were out on a ride and unfortunately we have to be on this small dirt road a l o t, on that day a giant truck came bombing up the hill way over the speed limit and just smiled while we signaled him to slow down. we had a 5 year old spooky pony with us, thankfully everyone was okay but it just sucks that people are so stupid when they drive.

There were some bleep drivers out there! Over 40 years ago when riding back from Epsom Downs towards Walton-on-the-Hill on a country lane I had a bad experience. It was a bitterly cold day with much frost. I had this twat driver that decided to rev his engine. Spooked the horse that I was riding. The horse dived into a 10'high hedgerow of brambles (blackberries) and plowed through the middle of it. Tried as best to keep my face down but emerged very cut up on my face and bleeding. Worst part was that it was so cold everything stung. Glad that didn't happen to you and enjoyed your latest video very much.
@HE4RTSFORV1CTOR1A Жыл бұрын
I've never been on a hack before, but when you look back and see a very fast car driving up, please signal it to slow down. But i felt bad for Rosie. And that white horse and ginger horse are so cute🥺
@molly_908 Жыл бұрын
sorry to correct but instead of “ginger” it’s chestnut :)
@Lioness99a Жыл бұрын
The problem with signaling for them to slow down is that it takes one hand off the reins, so you are less in control if the horse does spook. It's in the highway code that cars should slow down for horses, riders shouldn't have to remind them of that

Don't try to bully your self into riding on your own or doing anything you ate scared of. Get a friend to walk with you and just walk on a relaxed rein until you both relax. If you can't get someone to walk ( not ride) with you then try natural horsemanship groundwork exercises so you still have a relationship with your horse. You may feel better soon about riding but having a connection on the ground is just as rewarding. Keep safe.
