Iodo! What are the odds I also did a cloak video this week?! I talk about the Bocksten a bit, really interested to get your thoughts! I personally found the Bocksten template a little intimidating, so I docked it some points for that, but I'm glad to know it's not as hard as it looks. We came to many of the same conclusions about cloak length and "cosplay" cloaks choking you, and that proper weight distribution is important. I foresaw some problems with the Bocksten that you might disagree with though, so again, really interested to know get your input. Your kit looks great btw. Cheers!

Thanks so much for the comment, and I'm glad you like my kit :) I finally had time to watch you're video and I commented, but I'll say it again: amazing video! I agree with what you say about the bocksten cloak, it certainly doesn't work with backpacks (unless you wear them on the inside of the cloak), I guess I just get around this by always using side slung packs Now I think I'll have to make a how to video on the bocksten cloak

it is autumn, a perfect time for cloaks, and personally i think that cloaks together with hoods like the skjödehavnshood is highly underrated nowadays as warm peice of cloathing.
@IodoDwarvenRanger3 жыл бұрын
@@marcusfridh8489 I agree, I love cloaks/hoods, I often end up wearing them with everyday clothing as well as with my garb

@@IodoDwarvenRanger my best rainprotection is a a hooded cloak that i sewn myself, made of silicontreated canvastype cottonfabric, wich is bought as tentfabric for larptent. i made a tarp from that fabric, and from the spare of it i made the raincloak, and even a gugel-hood. at least the cloak i wear every rainy day, at fancypatries, like new years eve, familyparties and so on, i wear a homesewn do gi style wrapshirt with a vikingstyle skjöldehavns hood as my nicest garb.

@@marcusfridh8489 sounds nice :) although I find that I get good rain protection from a thick boiled wool cloak so no need for noisy modern materials ;)

Previously i thought cloaks we're bulky when paired with a bag but seeing as you put yours on, WHILE wearing the cloak sold me on this style, thank you Iodo!
@IodoDwarvenRanger2 жыл бұрын
It does depend quite a lot on the type of cloak and the type of bag, side fastening cloaks (like this one and the rectangle cloak) work very well with a single strap shoulder bag, but if you want to wear a backpack you would need a ruana cloak, and sadly for the half-circle cloak the only functional ways to wear a bag is fully underneath it or by cutting a strap hole BTW Thanks a lot for all your comments, and the subscribe :)

@@IodoDwarvenRanger i appreciate everything and want to say you are one of my favorite KZbinrs because your content and presentation is very entertaining. I looking forward to every new video. I have a Bockstensmannens mantel (as we say it in swedish). Bockstensman actually mean buckstoneman. I love this cloak since you can fling it up on your shoulder when warm weather and it also let's you manage your sword/axe.

I've read loads of your stuff on the MERF (I'm a lurker not a poster but the forum is a treasure trove), where I also learned about the Bocksten cloak from Greg. Great to put a face to a name. My general look is for a woodsman so I made mine mid-calf lengthwith a matching hood per Greg's pattern and it's great plus blends into woodland/dusk extremely well.

Hey Iodo :) The way you modified the cloak pattern with more a angular geometry to make it look more dwarvish was a nice touch ⛏ Speaking of dwarvish patterns i REALLY like the way you made your hood in the same aesthetic. Did you ever make a post on the MERF regarding its construction?
@IodoDwarvenRanger2 жыл бұрын
All I can find is this post where I shared a sketch of the pattern with someone: www.ranger.budgetauthenticity.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=47289&sid=fcb7ea2942a8668f4a66909da41d3863#p47289 where the numbers 1 and 2 represent the same length in two places, showing what matches up with what, there are no dimensions so you would have to make a mock-up from a cheap fabric, on the front and back panels the bottom angle (of the point) should be 90 degrees, and the top angle (where the flat bit is on the front) should be equivalent to the shoulder angle on a shirt that fits you

I do love the Bocksten style, though mine is wool so I don't get many opportunities to wear it. My go-to is a more traditional linen half circle hooded cloak. I usually loop the strap closure through the top lace on my jerkin which keeps it from pulling back on my neck. Also, regardless of style I don't go longer than knee length to keep it from snagging or getting stepped on.
@IodoDwarvenRanger3 жыл бұрын
I know it doesn't look like it in the video but this cloak is wool, it's just a much thinner wool than my winter version, even though it's still quite waterproof, it rains often in the British summer ;) attaching a cloak to you're jerkin is a great idea, I'll have to give that a try

@IodoDwarvenRanger3 жыл бұрын
I made it from hounds-tooth pattern wool, it's very almost a skjoldehamn hood (very simple pattern), I just used diamond shapes for the front and back so it matches the angle of my shoulders better you can see it better in the archery scene in my vambraces video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gZm6e2uJitqAg9E

yep, I have one of those military ponchos that you can also use as a shelter tarp, they work
@ScorpionRegent3 жыл бұрын
You can make a canvas poncho out of a painters drop cloth. You can easily dye it with coffee or tea for shades of brown. To make it water resistant, rub it down with a large candle and use a heat gun or a hair dryer to let the wax soak into the cloth.
