Great episode. One test you haven’t covered though, which is important for a lot of people due to limited storage cupboard space and it is stackability. No good if these perfect containers take up a huge amount of storage space in kitchen cupboards. Perfect if they stack inside each other taking up way less space. Thanks

The Pyrex Ultimate Glass containers stack well. They were recommended “with reservations” on the test kitchen website.

I have the Brilliance collection (plastic winner) and they stack/nest better than most. The little hinged clips on the lids can be annoying in the cupboard but I tuck the lids end-down into the bigger tubs and can get all the pieces of the set in a fairly small space.

I agree about the Pyrex. I guess any heavy glass works well. I have lots of Pyrex, and a set of Snapware that I use all the time. Trying to avoid plastic - especially single use plastic! I found out recently that of all recycled plastic, only 10% is actually recycled. The rest is floating in our oceans (we ingest it in seafood), breaking down in dumps, being made into mountains in huge warehouses.

I used the previous version of expensive Rubbermaid containers the last few years. I think the microwave at hubby's work is too high a wattage, they appear to melt in areas & crack. He has a hard side lunchbox too, so I know they aren't getting broken/crushed in there. I have a few left, but saw the new line and bought two full sets last year. I love these new ones, especially how they seal, stack, store and don't stain. We also hand wash, as we don't have a dishwasher. Regarding durability, a year later, they are melting & cracking the same as the ones I replaced, I've had to throw out some already. So disappointing! I'll be buying the square glass brands with locking lids, OXO & Ikea. I hope they will be a better long term solution.
@boonieloo47923 жыл бұрын
I've been reading recent reviews on the sleak & stackable clear Rubbermaid ones. They said were good in the video above....but I've seen a lot of complaints about breaking easy. Also that they get a white film you cant get rid of. Also that they do not hold up when microwaved. So- it sounds like they are great for food storage but you should hand wash (as you do). But also, if you want them to last, don't use them in the microwave. There are newer versions that are glass and the lids is the same as the older version. I'm debating on getting the plastic for food storage and size of each glass for reheating & cooking.

My thoughts on Plastic Containers..I use them rarely but when I do I, -only use them with cold foods. I bought them from a good company like 'Xeonic'. Looked for that "PP for plastic" on the bottom of the container. The best is to use glass, it is safe and will last forever. can be shoved in oven and freezed. Plastic is mostly great if you sell it. *just remember the best use for plastic is to use it with dry condiments in room temp in closet. freezing or microwaving, do it at your own risk*

I have been inspired to "Marie Komo" my kitchen. When it comes to wise choices for how to get a grip on the randomness, America's Test Kitchen comes through again, this time with a scientific examination of storage containers. For a person who has trouble opening various kinds of containers, Rubbermaid Brilliance makes my life simpler. After watching this ATK review, I was off the fence and all in for Rubbermaid brilliance. As a member of BB&B and a careful Target shopper, the price of this makeover was lessened. They look fabulous in my cupboard. Each dry food is perfectly visible and even beautiful in stacks of threes or fours with the 9.6 cup 11" deep container as my main size, followed by the 4.7 C and 3.2 C sizes. I have them organized by categories. Gone are the partially full spill-prone store packages and the bulk bags.. Every food has its own air-tight container. No one mentioned how satisfying it is to gently press down on lid, listen to the air escape, and snap down the "wings" that plug the holes and lock the lid in place. I use the smaller sizes in my fridge and freezer where I can quickly ID what is inside. Target sells MBD clear plastic bins in three long sizes that have turned all my fridge shelves into organized "file" drawers of similar foods. Within these bins the Rubbermaid Brilliance containers keep everything fresher longer. The two products used together are durable, clean, and make even a deep fridge accessible with a pull on the "drawer". The investment in all these two products has meant no more lost, rotting food.or wasted time searching for ingredients. I let go of all the mismatched containers. I'm left with a tidy kitchen that "sparks joy".

I was most interested in the chemicals used to make the non glass containers, gaskets, and lids. The reliability and functionality are important but are all secondary to the toxicity and and possible off gassing of the “plastics”.

Glass is the only safe material. Even if the plastic is bpa, bht, etc.. free there can still be issues.
@carolynroe1784 жыл бұрын
I agree that this is important, but in my opinion I don't think anyone can really attest to any particular plastic being safe at this point. Only in the last decade we've learned that phthalates and bpa are toxic hormone disrupters and they were certainly in plastics that were previously dubbed microwave, dishwasher, freezer safe. Glass is nonreactive in contact with acidic foods and doesn't leach chemicals into foods. It's heavy for sure, but I've been meaning to get more exercise anyway.

For the price you can’t beat the (plastic) Rubbermaid easy find lid containers. 10 bucks and you get 12 containers of various sizes. Sometimes you can find them with vents that you snap open/close in the lids. They’re very durable and the stack very nicely for organization. I highly recommend them. The only thing is I wouldn’t microwave chili or anything with high levels of oil in the containers, but honestly I wouldn’t do that to any plastic container. Try them, you won’t be disappointed! I spend a lot of time in my kitchen.

I have GlassLock containers. The oldest are 7 years old and they and the lids (gasket included) are all good as new. The downside to them, which does also make them seal incredibly well, is it takes some effort to latch them, especially the largest rectangular containers. They are not good if you don't have strong hands, have arthritis, etc. The design is quite similar to the OXO glass container, but as with anything, if OXO makes a version of something it's better than the competition. I'd put GlassLock as a less expensive but still quality alternative to the OXO, just with the caveats mentioned above.

You shipped back 45 year old Tupperware? That is CHEAP! And I am sure that is NOT the meaning of ‘lifetime warranty’. Since there is no way for readers to ‘verify’ the product failure FOR YOU we will have to presume that the good people at Tupperware just rolled their eyes, took back your crusty vintage and YOU got a bright new, modern set FREE. Now imagine if everyone did that. Tupperware needs to update that policy to 1 year or suffer profit loss that will hurt the business, the employees, etc. when, in fact, they made a brilliant product that CAN last 45 years. I have no respect for you and your crowing about how they stood by their warranty. YOU ARE CHEAP!

nateman10 In the case of Tupperware...they should give you the ‘original’ for your ‘lifetime warranty’. It’s poisonous to use plastic anyway. By the time anyone figures out the meaning of ‘lifetime warranty’, Tupperware, as all container manufacturers, will have switched over to glass. Only numbskulls today would be using 40 year old Tupperware and seeking its ‘lifetime replacement’. earth911.com/living-well-being/the-end-of-the-tupperware-age-choosing-safer-food-storage-containers/

One thing I have noticed about containers with a silicon gasket in the lid is that those with a round gasket tend to leak and be far from airtight while those with a flat, squared off gasket have a much better sealing ability. Just something to check for when purchasing containers. I really would have appreciated it if you had included FoodSaver vacuum sealing containers in this test as well. In fact, I find ATK is very negligent when it comes to testing vacuum sealers and bags in general considering how they are a must-have for anyone who keeps a well stocked freezer or does a lot of sous vide cooking.

I've had a lot of trouble with the oxo glass chipping easily. We hand wash and it's so incredibly easy to chip the glass. 6 months later my entire set is chipped. The fat seals are easier to clean but sometimes hard to seal. Going back to pyrex.

Thank you for this revue. I purchased the Rubbermaid 4-piece set for a friend and I'm glad I made the right choice. I'm also Thankful for the Oxo top-choice in the glass category. D

I live in a small house with little storage, so I had to maximize my possibilities and only use pyrex. Prep, cook, store and serve all in the same container. Never looked back.

Glass containers keep food colder and last longer in the fridge. I found this good for Milk placed in glass bottles with metal lids last a week longer than in cartons and plastic.
