This piece isn't often heard...so it is nice to be able to come here to listen to it. I love the picture of Debussy on a ship, it appears, in the ocean or sea, with his left arm overhead while smiling. I had never seen that one and it is an appealing picture of him.

He's certainly on land-you can see it in the background. I think it's a picture of him in Paris, since there's another photo similar to this one with the Eiffel Tower in the background.

I can see why he did not like this piece. But the fact that the math does not flow as well as it should, does not diminish the quality of this piece. It is the quirks I think that actually pull this piece together. Beautiful piece!

dakwa1 If Debussy didn't like this piece, one would have to say that while he was undoubtedly a great composer,he certainly had lousy taste!

I love to perform the Debussy Fantasie.. but I have only done it with two pianos. Gorgeous work and not played enough.

Richard , the fashion nowadays is to play too fast , the brain is excited and the body and soul don't have time to breath ...

A beautiful performance by an eminent Debussy specialist, a fine conductor, and a terrific orchestra. The late-romantic piece is scarcely Debussy; he disavowed it, and it wasn't performed in his lifetime. But bits in the third movement are akin to his Danse of the same period, and IMO this piece can now have its due without slighting his later mastery. After all, the work of Renoir progressed through distinct periods, and is still considered fully Renoir's.

Shauna0829 I know what I'm about to say may seem quite revolutionary, but I have little doubt that the reason Renoir's early work of lesser quality is regarded as fully Renoir's is because(wait for it)-he was the one who did it!

There is a kind of late-romantic emotionalism here, but there are distinctly Debussian elements, the same you see in his more mature style. You can hear the substantial use (beyond what anyone else was doing at the time) of the whole-tone scales, pentatonic scales, some modality and most importantly the frequent enharmonic chord progressions. The score is rife with these distinctly Debussian features, to the point that it would have been remarkable in 1890, when audiences would have rarely been bombarded with so many long whole-tone passages and frequent enharmonic progressions. Lastly, there is that characteristic love of beautiful sound and tone color. Those lush harmonies and sensuousness that Debussy could never fully abandon, even in his late work.

Marc Smith Why would he have wanted to abandon beautiful sound, tone color, lush harmonies and sensuousness?Jeez, wouldn't that be precisely what a composer would be hoping to achieve? Can't imagine him, after composing something like this, saying,"Aaaarrgh, dammit, not another beautiful piece! When will I ever master the art of producing boring tedious crap??!"

Debussy did not like the piece because it was 'too close to tradition' for his taste at the time, when he was feeling his way towards a music which would be very different from the 'usual' music of his time. This piece fits very well with Franck (Variations Symohoniques), Faure (Ballade), he wanted something reflecting an inner imaginary world of dream. This music is, in comparison with what he wrote later-on, much to 'real' and 'fleshy'.
