His reason was that he loved Hiccup so much that he didn't want to fly without him. Even when he left for 3 days it was to go find an item that was important to Hiccup. Apparently one week of stalking some white babe dragon was enough of a reason for him to break his 6-year "he's my other half" bond with the person who saved his life. No offense but I really don't understand why so many people think the Hidden World was an appropriate way to end the series.

Many say that the ending was about "letting go" but i think it is a kinda odd lesson "If your bestfriend gets a girlfriend you must let go".

@@ccvstudios1839 Yeah, I agree. It's cool in concept for the movies to end like the books, but because the movies are so different from the books, it really was forced and didn't work well at all. It's nice to want to stick to the source material and all, but there are times when you just gotta realize they are different things now and that trying to give them the same ending isn't gonna work. They have the same general concept of vikings and dragons, but the execution is completely different. It should've stayed that way; they should've made their own ending that was actually designed for the world of the franchise.

It feels very out of character for him to do so and this video sums up why. He spent the entire movie slobbering and kissing the ground the light fury walked on and didn't once think with his head. He may have been a kid in gift of the night fury, but he very clearly showed evidence in the 2nd movie of not ever wanting to leave hiccup, and the 3rd movie takes place only a year later.

Allie Jackson Toothless was the last to leave for a very good reason. He didn’t want to leave, but knew he had no choice. The Vikings can’t exactly visit The Hidden World, and the dragons weren’t safe anymore with the Vikings. He was the only one to look back before taking flight. It wasn’t out of character for him. He is the most intelligent species of dragon in the franchise, he knew there was no other way around the problem. Besides, as King of Dragons, he also had duties to fulfil, much like Hiccup being Chief.

2:25 I've been trying to decipher his change in pupils. Those cat-like eyes were his main size when he was a wild dragon in the first movie. Surely he felt that primal need for independence as shown by his eyes. And yet, he comes back with those adorable puppy-eyes. Those eyes must have had significance if he ended up not wanting the tail. I'd like to think it was a combination of things. His past is one that he doesn't remember fondly for a variety of reasons, mostly due to his kind being slaves to the Big Bad Dragon from the first movie. Yet, he still had freedom. The freedom to fly and survive as he could. It's also obvious that his life with Hiccup is fantastic. Food, shelter, a home, and a loving companion. So it's no wonder he comes back. Which brings me back to those eyes. Those eyes that were pure and piercing as he held down Hiccup when they first met. What is the significance of those eyes. That feeling of freedom is once again held back by the fear he lived by in the past. But like any holiday gift receiver, he's still awestruck. It truly is an amazing gift. But those are days he does not want to live in again. Not only do I think those eyes represent a remembrance of the past, they also represent the drive that comes with wanting to show a similar kindness. His gift to Hiccup is two-fold. He gives back his helmet, representing his first gift of understanding. He cares for his friend and he shows that in getting it. He destroys the tail which shows his bond with him. He not only cares for him, he trusts him with everything he has. He would rather live bound to him than live with the freedom that once came with great suffering. In conclusion, the eyes represent a lack of nostalgia. His life as a wild dragon was not happy, and he feels those memories crawling down his spine. He then decides to use his gift, not for its intended purpose of freedom, but to show Hiccup he only cares about their bond. His life is better with Hiccup, and he wants him to know that too. Just shows how much thought and care went into making this short, hell, this whole franchise. I can't think of any other animated franchise that has this much character building, I get emotional when Hiccup goes in to hug Toothless, and Toothless doesn't know what Hiccup is doing in that moment, fast forward to their goodbye in the third movie and Toothless is the one initiating the hug. It's all so masterfully put together. This franchise represents what animation *should* be, in all of the media of animated kids movies it's quite the breath of fresh air from all the terrible writing, toilet humor, and cash grabs of what the industry has turned into. I'm crossing my fingers the new show coming out in late December continues this trend.

People forget Toothless is still an animal. An intelligent creature, but still an animal. He found a potential mate and they chose eachother. He still loves Hiccup, and they visited eachother every now and then. It actually wasn't even Light Fury's fault the dragons left, she would have stayed if it weren't for Hiccup choosing to let them go into hiding, for their safety. Hiccup literally said this himself in the movie, before Grimmel's last attack. People are too quick to blame the female dragon... feels like it has roots in misogyny.. Yes, people are misogynistic towards animals. Just ask equestrians with their mares. Studies prove there's no difference in bad behaviour between a gelding and a mare, yet people blame the mare's reactions on simply being female. Whether it's intentional or not, there is evidence.

Y'know, for a one-off Christmas special, not only is it written as a straight up sequel instead of a side story, it's also for some inexplicable reason pretty darn important to the overall HTTYD story. Fishlegs only found out Meatlug was female from the egg storyline, said Dragon Eggs have consistently been exploding ever since, Baby Dragons are as stubborn as ever, and it's to the point where Toothless would've never been able to spend as much time with Light Fury if it weren't for Hiccup reviving the self-extending prosthetic tail. Astrid even mentioned that he "Tried it before and it didn't work." Holiday Specials are basically never canon, so in my eyes it's extremely refreshing in a strange way to see one so intertwined with the rest of the series.

Httyd is about separating your differences and making a better world together. the 3rd film contradicted everything from the other films and shows and executed the "we cant live together because humans are trash and dragons dont deserve us" horribly. I had been suffering from depression at that time and that message destroyed me mentally when I needed the series the most which is why this series means so much to me and why I am greatly disappointed with the 3rd film. It is a horrible message to give and insult not just to us who grew up with this film but to children as well. To add salt to the wound making toothless dumb and horny just to leave hiccup was a terrible idea as well. The first film and the gift of the night fury established the defiance of natures calling. Everyone told hiccup that toothless would leave him since he had his tail back like a bird going back to nature after being released from captivity but toothless came back and CHOSE to stay with hiccup. he IGNORED his primal instinct to stay with his best friend. Which is not only a good message to itself but stays true to the books. And I know the writers tried to make the 3rd films ending like the one in the books but it was a bad idea, not only because the dragons talked and the books literally addressed slavery but because the only other similarity they had was the characters names and personality's. I'm sorry if this mature topic confused you if you are a kid but it needed to be said.

Even some old villains who didn't think like this, such as Dagur and Alvin, changed their minds in the end. In the third movie Berk is overcrowded. They've already solved this problem in the TV shows: bring dragons to other islands and let them live there. No hidden world needed. Plus, how is one more guy with a weird opinion about dragons going to change Hiccups mind about the goal he fought so long for? Grimmel was taken out pretty easily. He was a cardboard cutout of a villain with a sappy backstory and a dumb excuse for hiccup to be afraid of him (how did one person manage to drive the most dangerous and solitary dragon species to near-extinction? How does he even know Toothless is the last one?) Hiccup gambles the safety of the dragons upon some myth he heard from his dad, hoping it exists while he could've come up with a thousand better solutions. Toothless is reduced to a flat character who abandons his best friend and flock, and thus his responsibilities for a female dragon of a different species and wasn't even troubled by this decision. He was only depressed when he had to leave his girlfriend he met two days earlier to save his best friend. Naturally, the Light Fury wouldn't even have fallen for Toothless, as we've seen that she's not the last of her kind (and because he couldn't flirt). Plus, the Light Fury is an ugly designed, non-character at all that is only there to lure Toothless away. She literally has no personality other than being afraid of humans. This story could've been so much better. Instead of this villain and stupid love story, Hiccup and Toothless could have focused on fixing the overcrowding problem, as well as working on themselves to become better leaders (as they seem to be struggling with that as well). No villain this time, just them. Maybe we could see the Gang more. Perhaps they could find out what happened to the night furies, by traveling south and they'd land on mainland Europe somewhere, finding tribes that have also made peace with dragons, and who happen to know that the Night Furies haven't gone extinct. This movie was so bad. It had so much potential it didn't use

This film is the exact reason why I absolutely despise of the third movie. Toothless (and the creators of this film) made it clear that he didn’t want to fly if he wasn’t doing it with Hiccup. And the fact that they turn around and destroy that with the story they laid out in the third film… it breaks my heart. I will never forgive Dreamworks for what they did to this series by ending it off the way they did.

on the contrary, i thought they handled it really well and gave it the best possible ending ❤ it was shown clearly that as long as the dragons live w the vikings there will always be problems that are hard to solve (lack of space, the dragon hunters etc), and over the years both hiccup and toothless have matured a lot and they understand that even though it is heartbreaking to leave each other, it is a necessary part of their lives for this change to occur so that they can both start a new chapter of their lives (eg starting a family) and so that the dragons can live in peace too 🥹 it isn't easy but it was really great of them to give us this bittersweet ending, and it's not like it was goodbye forever they still visited each other. to me it's the perfect ending to this beautiful trilogy unlike some series who get stuck in the past and are unwilling to embrace change, not allowing their characters to mature, develop and grow. that's the great part about httyd is that they allow their characters to mature so much ❤❤ adding on, u can also see in the third film that after toothless got his new tail, he hesitated a moment and looked at hiccup before hiccup nodded and he finally excitedly flew off to find the light fury. u can tell from here that he still cares a lot about hiccup and didn't just immediately forget about him after that. and because hiccup also loves toothless so he decided to let him be free. a perfect heartwarming ending to show their everlasting friendship in my opinion 😌😌 so grateful to dreamworks for this masterpiece

I love this special. It is one of my favorites. I watch it over and over again. I and my son want to make it a tradition to watch each year during the holidays, but we like to just watch it for the fun of it. OH, and we both are well over 18, but it is such a good little movie. I love it, and it is different, not what you would typically expect. I like that it has that viking touch to it that makes it a , magical adventure as well as a nice special. I love seeing Hiccup and Toothless finish it off with one of their flying jaunts together.

I gotta respect Hiccup and his invention Like how he made the tail for toothless in the first movie and advancing on to making a tail for toothless to fly alone to improving it and as well making it fireproof. Than the flights suit which is also amazing as it can retract and provide actual gliding for the user. The flaming swords that can retract and burst into flames or expel gas for him to ignite and even making it reloadable is it just amazing Everything that hiccup made was ahead of his own time maybe even the dragon hunting devices he created in the first movie. Oh and some other episode where Hiccup learns and discover Almost like the Tony Stark in his universe

Everyone has their theories about why Toothless looked like that when receiving his new tail, and part of me wonders, given how he actively chose to fly with Hiccup at the end of the special, if Toothless wasn't feeling... rejected by the new tail. Like, Toothless and Hiccup are normally so inseparable, so Hiccup offering him freedom might have looked tantamount to Hiccup telling him to leave in his mind. It's also why he's so excited to come back with Hiccup's helmet, (potentially why he also wakes Hiccup up later in the morning, as Hiccup has complained about Toothless waking him up so early). He considers it a peace offering, a "take me back."
