Simply poverty, injustice, and ill-fate working all together to bring someone down. Prays from morning until night/licks every boot he sees just to survive, but nothing changed even when he's on death's door. He was just wishing, at least on his grave, he could be adorned with the things he wasn't able to achieve when he was alive.

I might have to disagree... I think it is the opposite... This is the regret of a religious person who is doing everything right but nothing came out of it... At the tail end of his life... He might even want to sell out... No more glorification of POVERTY... I don't want to lie in a poor man's grave
@richsalazme Жыл бұрын
That's the beauty of this song! Listeners can interpret it any way they can. Here's mine.. There are actually two conflicting points to this song. First is the man worked hard his whole life, never did anyone wrong, loved his wife and kids and only wished nothing but the best for them. He stayed good until the very end. The other one is him wanting to spend his savings so he won't lie in a grave that represented his whole life. His dying wish could be seen as vain for some, but it could also be seen as the only wish this man ever asked that is for himself. The song is about the struggle of a lot of Filipinos. They work so hard with little to no pay off, kumbaga "isang kahig, isang tuka". And in the end, they bite off more than they can chew, aspiring for things out of reach, they end up poorer than ever. However, they are not to blame. They are just victims of years of broken system, we all are. Those two conflicting points is what makes this song interesting. Many are conflicted whether which of the two is the right thing to do, which made this song very subjective.

Hard to believe and Poor Man's Grave are songs that questions religion or how we choose to live life because of it... Like people need to suffer and/or live in poverty to make God happy... 🤔 These were written in the mid to late 90s... So pretty much they are ahead of the curve...

In an Esquire interview in 2017, Ely Buendia said that this song was his top Eraserheads song (in a rank of the top 5 which he composed) and the one that he was most proud of. I agree. It has a very international-quality vibe to it, almost Beatles-esque, and with a deep and personal meaning.

Back then, when Cutterpillow was just months old, the goal was to get the right chords and played it in an accessible acoustic. Fast forward, "financial literacy" is the reverberating theme on recent listening. Invest, including death insurance, so won't leave our family a dilemma on how to put us in our own wake. Better yet, to have our wake based on the chorus, "the man who have nothing" wishing for (regardless how morbid).
