"Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan says he gave back a wild letter that President Donald Trump wrote last month warning him not to be a "fool" and "the devil" in Syria.
During a visit to the White House on Wednesday, Erdogan was asked why he "ignored" Trump's letter from October, which urged him to strike a deal with Kurdish forces in northern Syria rather than invading.
"This letter was re-presented to the president this afternoon," Erdogan told the reporter.
It revived the diplomatic spat over the letter, which shocked many for its forthright language including an explicit threat from Trump to tank Turkey's economy if Erdogan displeased him."

Its probably true. Seeing how Trump wants to be so friendly to Russia, North Corea and China, he is unwilling to have the United States military to defer to Russia and North Corea provocations and military escalations. Trump wants to remove the sanctions that Obama administration initiated upon the invasion of Ukraine. Trump had the military stop joint exercises with South Corea because he didn't want North Corea to escalate, although they are still testing shooting missals. Trump had American troops abandon facilities in Northern Syria and blow others upon the sudden evacuation, leaving Russian troops to take over American built facilities. He's doing more for Russia's expansionist interests than anything else.

This is what pisses me off about "terrorism". Terrorism has to be seen in its own context. There is terrorism based on perceived intrusions and political grievances, but there is also terrorism stemming from a fight against an oppressor/invader. The latter situation is understandable, even if brutal and cold. Calling enemies "terrorists" is piggybacking off of the stupid War on Terror trend of the neocons from late 1990s, early 2000s. It provides a convenient excuse to dehumanize the opposition and militaries to bomb indiscriminately (see Syrian and Russian propaganda in 2015, second Chechen war), Iraq excuse, etc. I just call opposition fighters in most conflicts, well, fighters...militants, rebels. Leave "terrorism" for the judicial system. It's become a bad buzzword.

I am no fan of Trump by any means, but Turkey making deals on weapon systems with Russia is playing both sides, so they are on their own side not NATO. We have nukes and other weapons technologies in Turkey. Some of that could be useful to Russia for reverse engineering and their new friend Turkey might help them to it. It's not as though Russia didn't get into the nukes race without stealing our tech before. I think Turkey is becoming a solid frenemy.

As a white american, I take offense to that. I've known Trump is a worthless, racist, pathetic, corrupt, idiotic, petulant manbaby since he announced his presidential campaign. The worst president we've ever had. For numerous reasons. Utterly ruining our country. I don't even consider myself to be particularly patriotic, but I can't stand seeing him in office any more. Why? English skills are not a prerequisite for being an educated person or for being the leader of a country regardless of its size or significance. Turkish was once a much more important language than English ... but not many non-Turkish leaders spoke Turkish ... Arabic was a lingua franca for several centuries, but apart from some scientists and other scholars, not many in the Western world spoke Arabic........

@ Well, Erdoğan was approx. two years old when Turkey joined NATO, (1952) ... I suppose NATO membership affected the Tuks 'relationship with the English language ... but don't forget the Turks' glorious history and the sense of nationalism that this history evokes ... language is one of the most powerful nationalist parameters ...

Shouldn't someone in so high a station as a presidente of the United States speak a foreign language or two? Also, usally a president (or dictator) speak their native language so that THEIR people and THEIR press uderstand what they are saying verbatim without the risk that things get lost in translation or manipulation of the message/replies etc

@ I'm very surprised because I lived outside of Istanbul for a bit and had a terrible time trying to communicate with people. granted, I had more fingers than Turkish words in my head even then, but still. English might be my first language, but I'm reasonably proficient in Spanish and have a survival level German and French, but Turkey was definitely a struggle for lack of ease of communication
