Some info on Elif Şafak (Shafak in international market) She was never imprisoned or penalized in Turkey. She's the daughter of a diplomatic staff, brought up in international schools outside Turkey. Many Turks find her out of touch. She supported 'mildly islamist' AKP (while secular Kemalists warned) until around 2014. She was married to the prominent Gulenist journalist Eyüp Can Sağlık. She carefully plans her work with the hot agenda of the time, Armenian Genocide, Mevlana (Rumi), and now Women's Rights in Turkey. She has never been actively involved in these movements putting herself exposed to any risk. She just doesn't deserve this attention just for being a pretty English speaking woman.

What enlightened insight! As an older U.S. citizen, I am amazed by her commentary and how much it applies to me. I am so tired of the internet consensus that we can have only a single identity.
