ERGO-ROBOTS : CURIOSITE ARTIFICIELLE ET LANGAGE

Dans un grand œuf à peine ouvert, une tribu de jeunes créatures robotiques se développe et explore son environnement. Au-delà de leurs capacités innées, elles sont équipées de mécanismes leur permettant de découvrir des savoir-faire nouveaux et d'inventer leur propre langue. Dotées de curiosité artificielle, elles explorent les objets qui sont autour d'elles, ainsi que les effets que leurs vocalisations produisent sur les humains. En réagissant par des gestes, les humains créent une boucle d'interaction, et une forme nouvelle de communication entre robots et humains s'auto-organise au cours du temps.
L’expérience Ergo-Robots: Curiosité Artificielle et Langage est une installation et une expérience présentées dans le cadre de l’exposition Mathématiques, un dépaysement soudain du 21 octobre 2011 au 18 mars 2012, à la Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain à Paris.
Elle expérimente des modèles de la curiosité artificielle et de ses interactions avec l’apprentissage du langage chez les humains et les robots, développés par Pierre-Yves Oudeyer et son équipe INRIA ENSTA ParisTech, ainsi que des modèles développés avec Frédéric Kaplan et par Luc Steels.
Le développement logiciel et matériel a été réalisé par l’équipe Flowers (Inria et ENSTA ParisTech), en collaboration avec l’Université de Bordeaux I/Labri: Jérome Béchu, Fabien Bénureau, Haylee Fogg, Paul Fudal, Hugo Gimbert, Matthieu Lapeyre, Olivier Ly, Olivier Mangin, Pierre-Yves Oudeyer, Pierre Rouanet.
La mise en scène de l’installation a été conçue par l’artiste et cinéaste américain David Lynch

ERGO-ROBOTS: ARTIFICIAL CURIOSITY AND LANGUAGE

In a big egg that has just opened, a tribe of young robotic creatures evolves and explores its environment, wreathed by a large zero that symbolizes the “origin.” Beyond their innate capabilities, they are outfitted with mechanisms that allow them to learn new skills and invent their own language. Endowed with artificial curiosity, they explore objects around them, as well as the effect their vocalizations produce on humans. Human, also curious to see what these creatures can do, react with their own gestures, creating a loop of interaction which progressively self-organizes into a new communication system established between man and ergo-robots.
Ergo-Robots: Artificial Curiosity and Language is an installation and experiment presented in the exhibition Mathematics: A Beautiful Elsewhere, from 21st october 2011 to 18th march 2012, at the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain, Paris, France.
It includes and experiments computational of models of curiosity-driven learning and its interaction with language formation in humans and robots developped by Pierre-Yves Oudeyer and his INRIA ENSTA ParisTech team (Flowers), as well as earlier models developped with Frédéric Kaplan and by Luc Steels.
Software and hardware development was realized by the INRIA ENSTA ParisTech Flowers team in collaboration with University of Bordeaux/Labri: Jérome Béchu, Fabien Bénureau, Haylee Fogg, Paul Fudal, Hugo Gimbert, Matthieu Lapeyre, Olivier Ly, Olivier Mangin, Pierre-Yves Oudeyer, Pierre Rouanet.
