I read a lot of these comments. He sings from the heart. He is a deep thinker, that’s how he wrote this song. It was meant for all wars. The song is about the dilemma faced by the armed forces chaplain(sky pilot). He is faced with the problem of trying to give encouragement to soldiers whose job it is to kill, while he must live with his credo of "Thou shalt not kill". It was powerful then and it still is. Real life stuff.

This song isn't about Vietnam War. Because in the studio version of this song a Stuka dive bomber is heard. In Vietnam there were no propeller dive bombers. Jets took their place. You can also hear bagpipes, Americans never played them in Vietnam before the upcoming conflict. This song is about British pilots during the Battle of Britain and Chaplain who gives them Blessings of the Lord. This is the best live version of this song I've seen on YT! And Eric loved singing God's name out loud so much, my favorite part of this song: He smiles to young soldiers tells them it's alright, he knows of their fear in the forthcoming fight. Soon there'll be blood and many will die. Mothers and fathers back home they will cry. As the young men move out into the battle zone. He's feeling good with GOD you're never alone. He feels kinda tired so he lays on his bed, hopes the men will find courage in the words that he said. You're soldiers of God you must understand, the fate of the Holy One is in your hands, may the Lord give your strength to do your job really well. If it all was worthy, only time it will tell. In the morning they return, they got tears in their eyes, the stench of death, drifts up to the skies. A young soldier so ill, looks after sky pilot, remembers the word: "THOU SHALT NOT KILLLLLL!" Pray for worldwide peace

@Trashfished Sky Pilot was one of my top songs while serving in Nam,play it against mans religion to the word and the lie that was Vietnam maybe you'll find a chuckle.Right now Nike has set up house in Vietnam while Binh Danh as a Viet immigrant is hanging pictures of Dead Nam Vets and calling it ART.

I have always loved Eric, but he never was a deep thinker. His lyrics reflect that. When you confuse "you should not murder" with "you should not kill," you better drop to your knees and ask to be educated pretty quickly. *shrug*
