Eddie was as good as you think he was........ Clapton was that first, very early influence that stayed with Ed's style, but there were a few others.... Tony Iommi, who Ed got ideas's about riffs (jazzy intro to "Wicked World" has a "I'm the One" vibe imo) Ritchie Blackmore, Ed got alot of the rolling 3 notes per string licks and tremolo picking as well as tremolo bar ideas. Uli Jon Roth, Ed was obviously floored by the solo in "Catch your Train" when first hearing it (1976) and at that point interpreted the wide interval, major key licks he heard into his stretchy licks, like in " Ice Cream Man". Alan Holdsworth, who was a stylistic non threat to Ed ( thats why Ed admitted to listening to him)......you never really hear Ed admit to much, concerning influences, but if you use your ears and take the words of others ( like his pre fame contemporaries as well as peers) you realize Ed was aware of ALL guitarists as he was developing his chops and style.

The reason Eddie was so pissed off was because EC said of the project "One side was kind of a fusion thing, really, really, interesting and great to listen to." And the other side was a blues jam, It was so horrible, and they dedicated it to me... I was almost insulted that they should send this to me." So, making Eddie out to be the dick that ruined the relationship with his Teabag comment, is pretty messed up, imo. I think Eric Clapton's comment was way more insulting to something Ed and Brian May put their heart into, in recognition of Clapton.
@jameshoward166021 күн бұрын
The blues jam was horrible! Have you heard it. It was recorded poorly and was not even close to blues. Almost as bad as hearing Frank Gambale butcher red house live once. Some rock guitarists (Steve Vai)cannot play blues. Not everyone can do everything great. Steve Vai is brilliant at what he does. Eddie was the best! I think if he would have tried to really understand what Eric understands having studied the blues greats closely, he could have recorded something worth dedicating to Eric Clapton. But that blues jam with Brian May was not that. Just jamming rock licks over a 12 bar blues progression does not great blues make.
@theburkett6721 күн бұрын
@@jameshoward1660 I agree that the song wasn't a great "Blues" song, but Eddie and Brian are not blues guitarists. But they did what they thought would be cool for someone they admired, and Clapton trashed them like they were his peasants. The video makers made Eddie out to be a jerk who ruined the relationship without giving context to the story. I would have been ticked off too if I were Ed. I heard they did a song/tribute to Clapton and that is what Eric didnt like, he thought it was un emotional jam shit. Eddie was insulted he thought he was playing a tribute to his hero according to Brian May.
@jameshoward166021 күн бұрын
This is correct. Brian and Eddie recorded a 30 minute 12 bar blues jam that was mediocre at best, not even close to the tone and genius of the guitarists work with their respective bands. I remember not liking it when I heard it. The thing that Clapton objected to was that Eddie and Brian dedicated the song to Eric because it was a 12 bar blues and Eric is a blues player. Problem was that Eddie and Brian are not blues players and they just jammed their rock tones and licks over the 12 bar blues progression. Eric is a blues historian and a studied blues guitar purist. He was just honest that the “blues” song they dedicated to him was not blues. For people in the know about good blues, they can tell when rock guitarists try to fake playing blues, it doesn’t work. I think it embarrassed Eddie but Clapton was right. None of that takes away from Eddie’s genius with Van Halen, but it must be acknowledged that the recording with Brian doesn’t hold a candle to Eddies work with Van Halen. Obviously Eddie’s ego was quite reactive as exhibited by his fueds with DLR and Hagar. He didn’t handle rejection or criticism very well.

Clapton, as the elder statesman, could have simply apologized to Eddie, and all would have been fine. He deeply hurt Eddie's feelings plain and simple. I don't blame him. IMO, Clapton was intimidated by Eddie's playing - something he could never have done. We know Eric's insecurities by the instance of Eric seeing Jimi play for the first time. He was thrown into depression and very insecure. In one night he went from "Clapton is God" to something like "what did I just see?". Frankly, I found Clapton to be arrogant in general, based on all sorts the interviews I've seen with him. Personally, I think Eric's gift is songwriting, not pure guitar skills.
