Thanks for this memory, it is completely different perspective now and I just recognised: it wasn't my marriage, it is this great song that can make you cry no metter what is going on around you. I watched my uncle Tom rock back and forth to this song after finding out he was dying of cancer that spread thru his body. We drank to the the many good times we shared, and he put this song on repeat and cried for hours. We both cried in a profound understanding. It is something I will never forget.

I wish I could give you the magic formula, but after losing my father 20 years ago, all I can say is that it gets easier, but you will always miss him, which is sentiment to just how much he meant to you. To quote the author David Gemmel,, our fathers were men to walk the mountains with. Don't get hung up on it, but embrace everything that reminds you of your father And instead of wallowing in possible self pity, strive to be the man, that he always knew you were. he was always proud of you, if you can be true to yourself, here on in, he can always be proud of you

I just came across this song...not meaning to find this song but I did. I'm crying my eyes out. My late husband suffered from COPD, he had a difficult time breathing and was on oxygen, we slept in different rooms for quite some time bc of his condition. I just wanted him to feel comfortable. I now regret feeling like that bc I could have been mistaken, maybe it would have made him feel better, me lying bedside him. A week before he passed I had a feeling of just wanting to go lay by him and hold him to let him know I loved him, that he was loved. He knew I did but this feeling I felt from within felt important to pursue. I walked in the room and he was resting quitely, I chose not to interrupt his calmness, his sleeo bc he wasn't struggling at that moment to sleep. I walked away. He passed away on Mother's Day 2020. Then last night before I laid down I was reminiscing in my mind about that time, feeling guilty, wishing I would have just laid down by him and held him. I got teary eyed and went to sleep. I had a dream in the middle of the night that he was sitting on the couch in our living room and he looked really healthy and good I was scrubbing the floor on my hands and knees.I heard him say something, not sure what he said but the look in his eye made me feel like he was feeling sorrowful. I thought to myself I can ignore what he was saying and continue on scrubbing or I could stop for a moment and give him attention as that's what I felt he was trying to say to me. I chose to crawl over and lay my head gently on his lap to allow him to know I was there and that I loved him. I looked up and he smiled and then he began fading away. I couldn't understand why he was leaving but then I realized he wasn't really there bc he had passed away. I started crying really hard and I woke up bawling my.eyes out, realizing it was only a dream. Was he telling me to not feel guilty for not taking that opportunity in lying down beside him bc he now knows where my heart truly was and the smile he gave me was a sign of happiness that he wanted me to feel in letting me know, he knows he was loved by me. I'm not sure, but I feel like that's what he was doing as he drifted away, it felt like he was telling me to be at peace and goodbye. I Love You, Honey!! May you rest in peace! "I will see you again!" People don't take life for granted...move when your spirit tells you to move bc it could be your last chance!! Embrace your loved ones and let then know you are always there for them heart, mind, body and soul!! God Bless each and everyone of you! Love to ALL!

I lost 2 children. My son at 40 weeks. and my daughter at 38 weeks. I played this song at their funeral. It is a continuation of Tears in heaven. It is actually a happy song. He speaks of his son passing. "Since you've been gone I'm drowning in a river of tears". But he has to go. But one day when he dies, he will find himself back there. and his son will greet him. His son will keep him from drowning in tears for the people he left behind.

I lost my wife and baby to a home fire and this was played at their memorial it's been 12 years and I still breakdown wishing one day I can go back in time and save them, the hurt has ever stopped, I miss them so much, when they needed me the most I wasn't fast enough to save them ...that guilt 😔 😭 of not being able to save them and hearing them scream haunts me ,I break down daily, that's when you know, that love was unconditional and true to your soul, when you cry like you just lost them 12 years later, and you search and search for way to get over it and you never get where you want because you feel that was the path you were supposed to go down being with them and not with out them 💔 😢, I pray everyday that I pass on from a natural death just to be with them and feel the love from her once more because nothing else feels right...

👍 💖 🎤 🎸 I’m going on 70 now and have always been a big fan of Clapton. I ‘grew up’ with him and still love his ‘older’, more ‘classics’ like Layla and Cocaine, as well as this one (although done later on), along with his more recent songs and performances (such as his live concert in ‘23 that I went to). But THIS - with him playing and singing AND the added video background makes it my favorite yet! * I’m not implying that I didn’t like or feel the others versions weren’t good - they were/are. To me, this song shows and proves that there’s a completely different ‘side’ and style to Clapton’s more ‘well known’ one based on its meaningful lyrics and the more thought provoking, ‘melancholy’ vibe it gives (as opposed to ‘Layla’). Another winner in my book! 👏

For those people here who have or who are suffering intense pain, I would suggest Holy Mother by Clapton. It expresses hope in that there is someone to comfort you and the guitar solo at the end is just sensational at conveying that emotion. It is less bleak and hopeless than River Of Tears and was written when Clapton was in the depths of addiction. Also, there is a wonderful live version where Clapton is joined by Pavarotti and when he sings it moves one to tears. I have suffered illness since 1985 and witnessed all my hopes swept away so I know how you feel. God bless you - and may the Holy Mother wipe away your tears.

This song, as so many of Clapton's do, applies to many times [chapters] of my life and acts as a time machine. At the end of the track I feel as though I have a hole in my heart, reconciling the fact I can change nothing from my past- only live with it. It's quite a powerful, beautiful and torturing thing that a song can do that. Thank you for the wonderful images... very calming!

mickos0151 Thanks Mickos. My favourite band way back was Cream, and Eric was my favourite guitar player, along with Jeff Beck and Peter Green. I have to confess that when he changed his musical direction from Blind Faith onwards my interest wavered. But as the years have gone on I find myself becoming more “tuned in” to him again, but mainly because of the man he has become - very easy to like and respect. And he has always been a wonderful player, but it’s just that I always preferred his astonishing, powerhouse rock blues playing, and his phrasing on Disraeli Gears. But I like to think that for me, it is as important to be a fan of Clapton the man, as a fan of his playing. So, like you, I am really pleased that at this “mature” stage of my life, Eric has always been around.

Eric Clapton composed “River of Tears” for his 1998 album Pilgrim. The song delves into profound themes of loss and sorrow, reflecting Clapton’s personal experiences, notably the tragic passing of his four-year-old son, Conor, in 1991. This heart-wrenching event profoundly influenced Clapton’s subsequent work, with “River of Tears” serving as a poignant expression of his deep grief and emotional journey. The haunting melody and evocative lyrics of the song highlight Clapton’s exceptional ability to convey complex emotions through his music.

She lived a lifetime of that and thought God was directing her somewhere where she felt something she never did before, be careful do not ignore what The Lord exposes to your soul the devil tried to make it look beautiful but he was the devil in disguise. It's 3 miles to the river, That would carry me away, And 2 miles to the dusty street, That I saw you on Today, It's 4 miles to my lonely room, Where I will hide my face, And about a half a mile to the downtown bar, That I ran from in disgrace, Lord how long do I have to keep on running, Seven hours, Seven days or Seven years, All I know is since you've been gone, Feels like I'm drowning in a river, Drowning in a river of tears, Drowning in a river, Feels like I'm drowning, Drowning in a river, In 3 more days Ill leave this town, And disappear without a trace, A year from now maybe settle down, Where no one knows my face, I wish that I could hold you, One more time to ease the pain, But my times run out and I got to go, Got to run away again, Still I catch myself thinking, One day I'll find my way back here, You'd save me from drowning, Drowning in a river, Drowning in a river of tears, Drowning in a river, Feels like I'm drowning, Drowning in a river Oh how long must this go on, Drowning in a river, Drowning in a river of tears
