Every time I hear that song I have to think how fortunate I am that I have my daughter and cannot imagine what my world would be w/o her. 🥲

This song tears me up every time....it came out about three weeks before my fiance was killed in a car accident by a drunk driver....it helped me through the dark times, along with some other great music....Fiddlers green is another that is a very carthatic song.....Moving on from any kind of loss like this a a very hard thing. It takes fighting every day to keep it from overwhelming you.....great review my man...thank you

I truely don't understand how Eric Clapton wrote this song, it would take every bit of strength in me, and I still don't know if I could. Such a beautiful song.

Especially when you know he had just got clean from a long time abuse of alcohol and drugs. God knows how he managed to not escape back and like try burying his sorrows in alcohol/drugs.

As a New Yorker, I vividly remember when this happened and the cloud of sadness that hung over the city in its wake. . . can never hear this song without all the emotion rushing back. Your reaction was so heartfelt and respectful it, too, touched me. xox

Don't know how he gets through performing that song, it gets me every time. You need to check out Eric Clapton playing with iconic blues players like BB King, Buddy Guy, etc, any one, I recommend highly.

I come from a family of 6 boys, 2 girls. I'm the youngest boy. My oldest brother went in for heart surgery everything went fine. The next day he was awake and alert, talking my sister-in-law. We thought he made it through fine. His blood pressure dropped when everything went downhill and we lost him. Just 4 days ago. He was my oldest brother, taught us all so many things. A great man with great faith in the Lord above. We are all in shock. My dad has passed but my mom is 87 and it kills me to see her go to what you just said that a parent should never go before their child. I haven't listened to any music since this happened. I went on KZbin and you were the first to pop up with this heartbreaking song. I see it as a reason to get this song first. Just thought it was ironic to help me through. Thanks brother! ❤❤🙏🙏

Amazing how God has his way of providing perspective in the midst of the mundane. Also, goes to show that our humanity unites us, no matter the race, culture or political creed...we all shed a tear when this kind of tragedy strikes, and we all marvel at the beauty that can accompany these events. Peace J!

I always tried to figure out if it's his son's words, or his, when he says.."I know I don't belong here in heaven"....and "Would you know my name, if I saw you in heaven?"..Could it be both?...Thoughts on this?

I never thought of it that way, that it could be his son saying that he didn't belong "here in heaven". I don't know. But I think that makes the song even sadder. Oh, God.

Eric Clapton, one of my heroes, and Eddie Van Halen’s main influence for his own playing. Eric has overcome a lot, drug and alcohol addiction, the loss of a child, I admire the man. Glad you are diving into his music. Obliviously ‘Layla’ (the original Derek & the Dominoes version) should be your next stop, but also his music with Cream, or his huge career as a solo artist is worth digging into.

I will never understand the feeling of losing a child but watching my parent lose two of their children before they both past away themselves must have been just gut wrentching. Even though my sister passed at the 45, watching my Dad says his last goodbyes to my sister before she passed was so beautiful and so painful to watch. My brother who was my parents only boy passed away at the age of 5. so cherish every moment you have with your loved ones especially during time of covid..

Great review, I'm glad you knew the story, I remember the day I heard the news on the radio my wife & I we floored by the enormity/gravity of the loss, this song is a beautiful tribute to his child. Eric wondering if he will ever get to heaven, because as we all have some regrets for our actions and don't know if we deserve to go to heaven. He has skated close to death with heroin early on (post Cream) and alcohol addictions. His "There's One In Every Crowd " is a great look into his post alcohol rehab.

This song makes me think of my younger brother, who is in heaven. I miss him so much, but I had to keep going. We all do, because as you said, life goes on. Now that I'm facing my own mortality, heart failure, life seems so much more important. I will learn if my brother does know my name, know who I am. I want to hug him, love him, let him know how much he was missed. We all need to understand that we only get one shot at life and we all, we all, need to do better to let the world, and each other, know that love is real.
