As far as I know, he's never let any kind of substance abuse affect his playing, or performance. Carlos Santana said of him many years ago 'He is pure, you can see it in his eyes.' Or something like that. Amazing artist.

We don’t know his life. Or even try to be judgmental. But I think it’s clear he’s a sober and clear minded man. His guitar playing and musical ability is otherworldly. We’re lucky to have him exist in our lifetime.

Damn I was there at the front row! ❤️🔥 After the show I took a photo of his effect pedals. You wouldn't believe they weren't even on a decent pedal board. They were just like either screwed or taped on a piece of plywood. And some of his pedals looked like they're more than 20 years old. Even their labels & paints are completely gone. He's so humble he would smile and nod each time the audience applauded. Much love & respect for this legend.

I met him a few times as well. Over the last 34 years! Very nice guy that would talk to you. I have about a dozen autographs. He once dropped a pick, I was from row as always, I pointed it out to my wife,he saw me,and while still playing went over,picked it up and put it in my hand . It's been on my livingroom wall for decades. Superman to me. Superhero deluxe. Did I mention he's one of the best guitar player that ever lived?

Brilliant, and imperfect at the same time. His approach is very unique, and not easy to pull off. And he improvises, instead of playing the exact same thing every time, which always includes risk. But also produces the best things.

This is the best piece of guitar music ever written. I love it SOOOOO much I listen to it over & over again. And I smashed it every time on PS2 back in the day lol. What I love the most about this performance are the bum notes at around 8:36 and the way he just carries on, laughing it off. First class performer 👌

Even in his twenties he wasn't brilliant. His true skill is on writing, that is marvelous. But as a guitarist itself he has akways been pretty mid. Is not a critique, just a matter of fact. There are guitarists that play far better, but probably they even know anything about writing.

I think you can be a fan of Eric Johnson and acknowledge that there are a few timing and execution issues in this performance. It’s not saying he isn’t an amazing player, or even that there aren’t some great moments in this performance- it’s just not his cleanest. No one has to post video of themselves doing it better to say that.
