This is a GREAT man teaching open minded youth to remain open minded. If the people of the world had a fraction of his later life open mindedness, and courage, they would not be so impoverished by their establishment masters today.

@Quinzio I think that you meant to write 'worthless'.

The fundamental flaw is to see a rotating phenomenon as an object. It is not. It is made of matter, like an object, but it is not an object. It is a momentum transference device. For this reason the weight is mobile. If you want to understand this extraordinary proposition, please... ...watch my layman's explanation of how gyroscopes work using only geometry I've worked out myself, and there is a second video which gives my equation to calculate the dilution of weight in relation to the spin. (The weight does not reduce, but the effects of gravity are diluted in a similar way to the way Dolby reduces noise on a cassette tape) Here is the playlist. kzbin.info/aero/PLz4azdHbQ7mnmwAfm1LwwIqcLH9Ax3C5y

@flowerbower ----- Where are his 'misconceptions'. In making people think? And where in academia have there been worthwhile areas of research without some misconceptions?

Sure. Science is 'a direction and not a place', in that it is a means of enquiry and not a fixed set of rules. However, some truths become reliable 'points-of-reference'. Looking for propulsive effects from gyroscopes is like trying to get to the 'East Pole'.

@sixmagpies The great scientist, Lord Kelvin, performed the same demonstrations but did not tell lies about the phenomena involved. In fact, the trick done with the child is called 'hurrying-on the precession'. It was one of the first behaviours of the gyroscope to be noted. It is also known as the Kelvin Effect. Laithwaite was like a modern Tesla: stealing the discoveries of others, and pretending to be a purveyor of mysteries.

I don't believe that at anytime Laithwaite claimed these effects as his discoveries, I looked for this video on KZbin because I remember watching this on TV as a 14 year old. I also checked to see if there was a video of Lord Kelvin doing the same demonstration but was disappointed not to find one. Maybe because Kelvin died in 1907....

Maybe they do? maybe they don't? Isn't that what science is about? "The most important thing is to never stop questioning"

But you are right about most people being ignorant. It is particularly alarming that our society depends upon science and yet it is despised as a career choice. Knowing how to operate gadgets is understanding technology; not science. This complacency is a recipe for disaster but, because of the long 'lead-in' time of new scientific discoveries, it will not become apparent until it is too late. Even in the short term, people can be fooled by the manipulation of data which they do not comprehend.

@sixmagpies No, this is an incompetent engineer foisting his misconceptions on a gullible audience. He was rightly censored for perpetrating this fiasco.

@sixmagpies He was feeding nonsense to innocent minds. How can that be laudable? Sure there have been such areas of research: one of them was the early work on rotating bodies (Newton himself originally held some peculiar views on centrifugal force). But the false ideas were all resolved. That is kind of the point of research: one resolves the fallacies and paradoxes and then MOVES ON. Pretending that gyroscopes still hold any mystery is totally dishonest.
