I don’t know if anyone will find this or care, but the hour this song came out I listened to it in my car. I had just finished with a benefit for my sister, who’s dying of a terminal brain cancer. We can’t save her. She’s only 11. This person that I’m in love with had the idea to organize the benefit, and they had just left in their car to go home too. I had to sit, and exist, in my car, alone in a dark parking lot. I remembered this song came out, and listening to it triggered everything in me that I’d bottled up. All the pain for my sister, and the joy of the benefit, and the sorrow over the person I love. They don’t… love me the way I love them. They like the way we are. Now I’m watching this person realize they’re in love with their best friend, and it hurts so much. My sister is fading, we only have a few more months. This is her last Christmas. I don’t have anyone I can talk to. I’m not brave enough to talk to my parents. I’m just watching as I break my own heart. All I could do in the few moments of listening to this for the first time was sob and think that I’m not alone. People hurt. Songwriters hurt. Artists hurt. Crying during this song was what I needed. It’s one of my favorite songs now. Everything still hurts. I know it’ll hurt for a long time. But I want to be okay. Someday I’ll be okay.
