Thank you for this marvelous lesson. As John Barrows first "kid" student (1958-1964) in his New York City days, here is q quote from the late Kendall Betts: In the summer of 1969 I was participating in the Marlboro Festival and we were rehearsing the Beethoven 7th from 9 to 12 AM with Pablo Casals. John Barrows was playing 1st and I was on 2nd. I had arrived at 8 and warmed up for an hour. John showed up about 8:50, walked to his chair, belched out a middle C, put his horn down on the chair and went to have coffee. He returned at the oboe's A and proceded to play the 1st horn part brilliantly without an assistant. I was stuggling to keep up on 2nd at that awful hour of the day. At the break I asked, "John, do you warm up at home?". He replied, "No, Kenny, and let me tell you something, kid. I used to warm up. I warmed up every day for years and years. One day I was warmed up!".

That is not to say that Mr. Farkas' approach to the Horn is without merit. Mr. Barrows' and I often talked and dissected much of Mr. Farkas' teachings until Mr. Barrows untimely death. Although, for me, John Barrows is my benchmark, as Mr. Barrows taught, we can and should learn from others and find our sound. Indeed, I learned a great deal about horn playing from 4 hours of lessons with Lorenzo Sansone. BTW, I turned down a scholarship to the Julliard to go to medical school (I'm a Pathologist) and play Principal in community/local orchestras on an Alex 107x using a Moosewood JB cup and Atkinson A rim. Again, thank you Sarah and Eric for your eye-opening lesson!
