Hiring a GREAT artist like Korngold certainly gave WB a lot more prestige..The studio finally realized they had to spend money and move away from the inner city gangster films and make sweeping romantic/historical epics... The Warners inner city gangster films were fun but they had to make room for the BIG types of costume films that were formerly the territory of MGM and Paramount..Korngold's music aided the images that took the audience: bounding on the Spanish Main; watching the growth of a young man as he faced obstacles and finds his destiny during the Napoleonic Era ; travelling through a technicolored Sherwood Forest ; duelling in a Nottingham Castle; court plotting in Elizabethan England ; following the doomed path of a crazed and sadistic sea captain who felt it was "better to reign in Hell than to serve in Heaven " aboard his whaler and finally romantic tragedy and the triumph of democracy in Juarista , Mexico... MANY, MANY THANKS FOR POSTING THIS EXCELLENT RECORDING!

I always loved this movie & I always loved this score. Arguably it is one of Korngold's best, it incorporates 'La Paloma' , empires Carlota's favorite, but in a way that evokes tragedy as well as well love & inocence. Beautiful score. Great job by NZSO

One of Korngold's less celebrated scores but, arguably, one of his finest, in my opinion. There is, for instance, a wonderfully imaginative, haunting sequence 16:28-21:03. The film, starring one of the best-ever pre-Brando "method" actors, Paul Muni, is also underrated these days....I wonder why? Great performance by the NZSO and Sedares.

Juarez is one of Korngolds many superb scores, very well performed here. I have loved Korngolds film music since I first saw "Prince and the Pauper" when I was about 10. I personally always enjoy the original Warner Bros Orchestra versions most. Maybe this is because in the days before most of them became commercially available I used to record the films from TV on VHS. I used to rewind my favourite Korngold sections over and over again. It took hours to get through one film. It would be great to have a complete recording of "Of Human Bondage" a truly outstanding score for a second rate film. I also love the music of Max Steiner, Franz Waxman, Alfred Newman and Bernard Herrmann. Today's film composers don't begin to equal that generation.

Another great score. The Orchestration was always by himself and superb!

Owing to time constraints, Korngold would compose in short score and then have the assistance of orchestrators to prepare the full score.

Apparently there is an Overture which is not in this selection, definitely give that a listen. Evocative.

I believe that the overture was written for the premiere of the movie.

It should be pointed out that Korngold was a Viennese who had composed music for REAL royalty!

I love Korngold scores. Of all I have heard this is probably the least satisfying. With few exceptions the themes do not seem to fit the wonderful film and Paul Muni's and Brian Aherne have magnificent performances.
