I am an ardent opponent of permadeath in video games as a general rule, but the way Valkyria Chronicles implemented it is one of the few good ways to do it. By giving the player the option to send a medic to help the fallen soldier, the game changed permadeath from an incredibly annoying mechanic into a choice for the player. Throughout playing the game, I never lost a soldier to permadeath because every time a soldier fell, I always mounted a rescue operation which succeeded. It was a fascinating gameplay mechanic, a soldier falls, and immediately, a mission to capture the flag transforms into a rescue operation.

As an unexpected corollary to this: the game tries very hard to make you sympathise with Selvaria, but I never really forgave her for killing Dallas at Barious (she riddled her with laserbeams and stomped on her body in the same activation; there was nothing I could do). I held a grudge against her right to the end.

No marketing from Sega + no worldwide release + release on dead platforms or to early (PS3 + PSP) + terrible release date (they released VC4 with Monster Hunter World in Japan, and with Dragon Quest XI in West + after Fire Emblem Three Houses announcement, which overshadowed this game from huge marketing, because Sega not spend millions $ on marketing like Nintendo did). If no one hear about game, they dont buy game even if is 95% on Metacritic like Skies of Arcadia. This series need high budget reboot (minimum 50-100M $ budget, because Fire Emblem exist which took 90% of japanese SRPG audience), but unfortunately dev team died in 2018 and Ryataro Nonaka + Shuntaro Tanaka left Sega in 2017 + Sega like always spamming Sonic and Yakuza games, which keep overshadowing their rest games.

SEGA is keeping them on hibernation along with their devs, passively milking it with re-releases,collabs,merch and everything else they can think of aside from an actual new entry. Which is fair enough I suppose since imo if we're going off sales,VC as a franchise should've disappeared since 2. But still this kind of teasing to keep fans hopeful and on edge is getting tiring especially since it's been almost the same amount of time between 3 and 4,if we're not counting the HD remaster of 1 that came out between said games

Do you know they ported Persona 5 Royal, Hatsune Miku Project Diva Megamix, and few other games on Steam ? It's funny because they do not that with own games (Sakura Wars, Valkyria Chronicles 2&3, Skies of Arcadia, Shinobi PS2 etc.), but they port Atlus and AM2 games on PC. There is hope, because they looking now for devs who are familiar with Sakura Wars and Valkyria Chronicles, but it takes ages when they publish a brand new game again. Hmmm... maybe in 2028 ? @@Mintcar923 VC2 was huge downgrade from VC1, because Sega chased the trend to copy Persona 4 like most of niche jrpgs at that time. I'm pretty sure if VC4 was VC2 released on PS3, the series would sell much better, than VC2 on PSP. VC3 fixed that, but it was released only in Japan, due to bad sales outside of Japan. At least it ended as a best selling game in franchise in Japan , debiut with 101k physical copies in first week, but this was still weaker sales than most of games in older sister franchise - Sakura Wars (the weakest selling main game in Sakura Wars series had 95k on PS2, still better than VC1 with 85k, the best one had ... 507k in first week on Saturn). Thats probably why Sega after worst selling game in series in Japan (VC4 - which debiuted ,,only'' with 67k), returned back to Sakura Wars series not that long ago (PS4 game debiuted with 141k physical copies in FW, which is still better than best selling Valkyria Chronicles game in Japan).
