So, as far as we know, nothing ever happened with Angelica and Alexander. They had a flirty-ish relationship (at least a very joking one) and would send letters to each other and such. She was pretty much the wise older sister and he would talk to her about politics and things since she was an intelligent woman. She did jokingly ask if she could borrow him once I believe, in a letter to Eliza, but it does just seem like sisterly banter. Exact quote, "if you were as generous as the old Romans, you would lend him to me for a little while." If anything, I've heard them being described as almost the same person, like in the song, they matched wit and had similar political views and things so they got along well. Angelica actually lived in Europe for a good chunk of time, so there was very little evidence that the two had anything but a very affectionate friendship. The rumors were there, though. In reality, Angelica had already gone off and eloped with her husband, by the time Alex and Eliza got hitched, so yeah. Oh, and their father did have sons, so yeah. (Alex and Eliza also named their first daughter after her) This song is great though and I think it works pretty well in the musical. Yikes this is long :p But I hope it's helpful to someone!

One of the things I really love about the live performances of Helpless and Satisfied is you can see the movements of the other song in the background. Someone made a comparison here on KZbin that shows that pretty nicely. For example you can see Alexander and Angelica dance/talk with each other during Helpless just like in Satisfied etc.

And Szin's animatic does a good job of portraying that too. For instance, Angelica's dab...

This song evokes the strongest emotional journey yet, at least so far in the musical, but I also really appreciate the little details in both the song and Szin's animatic. 0:24 The piano notes here are a recurring theme for Angelica, first introduced in the Schuyler Sisters during her interaction with Burr, but more prominent here. Somehow expresses different emotions with variations on the same basic pattern of notes 1:37 I love how the word "tripping" here is sung with a rhythm that feels like it's tripping, that anticipation and delay in the middle of the word 4:06 The animatic has written "cha cha real smooth" idk why but I find this hilarious 4:12 "I know my sister like I know my own mind" this is my favorite part, when Angelica turns her passion up even further singing how much she cares about her sister Eliza 4:16, 10:00 I love how the animatic switches between different colors and styles to show their actual emotional states contrasted with the faces they put on to perform for others, it makes those emotions feel so much more powerful even while it makes me sad I still love it 10:41 "Never be satisfied" is not just a one-off line. "How right is she?" Idk this musical-idea will return in a couple different forms in the rest of the musical, changing to show contrast between then and now, contrasting emotional contexts in much the same way that this song and the previous one contrasted emotional contexts between Eliza's point of view and Angelica's point of view

Re:Angelica theme-- actually the notes of Angelica's theme are NOT repeated here (as they *are* in 'Take a Break', and the Finale), and I have always wondered why...

Since you were wondering, what actually happened was there we’re 15 schuyler kids, only 8 lived till adulthood. Several were boys so Angelica didn’t actually have to be the one to socially climb. She was already married when they met Hamilton so she still couldn’t be with him even if she wanted to. I’m pretty sure there really were feelings there but for different reasons she couldn’t be with him
@lindseysquire84174 жыл бұрын
In case you're wondering about some details thrown in with John Laurens (like how he looks kind of sad during this song), there is strong historical evidence to suggest that he and Hamilton were lovers. No one knows for sure, but their letters were extremely flirtatious, and they were incredibly close.

You unpack all the nuances of each piece with such sensitivity that I'm noticing things about both the animatics and the lyrics of each song that I never did before. I almost can't believe you've never heard these songs before. Also, how are you able to remember the lyrics after hearing them only once? You are amazing! Thanks for sharing your reactions with us. :)

The brilliance here is in Lin’s subtle use of words with a double meaning... to your union... of Alexander & Eliza AND the colonies... satisfied again referring to both marriage & the colonies journey to independence. Brilliant.
@xXxJason_ToddxXx4 жыл бұрын
It did not happen. In fact, Angelica was married by the time Alexander and Eliza got married, she met him for the very first time at their wedding. They did have an intellectual and flirtatious relationship, but it's widely believed my most historians to have not gone farther than that. Angelica loved her husband; as a matter of fact, she eloped with him because of her father's disapproval. She actually had several younger brothers who survived infancy so the 'My father has no sons, so I'm the one who has to social climb for one' is not just creative license on LMM's part - he admitted that when he wrote the song he'd forgotten about the brothers, lol. And yes, Angelica Schuyler did say to her sister in a letter "If you were as generous as the Romans were you would let me borrow him", but this again is widely believed to just be a joke. I can't imagine that they did have an affair considering Angelica lived in London and Alexander in New York and Philadelphia for the majority of the 80s and 90s, if they did it was intellectual at best in my opinion. A fantastic song, but not historically accurate thankfully! Eliza's story is hard enough to read about without adding in getting cheated on by her husband with her sister into the mix.
@hanaeve__4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I think I recall Lin saying he added that in for a bit of drama. I think he probably made it up to be more than it was because of the whole joke flirtation stuff that went on between Angelica and Ham, and again, d r a m a. Lol.

Found this after watching your Disney+ Hamilton Reacts and I love this! These animatics were the first way I got into hamilton as well! And this video in particular is amazing because you reminded me that Angelica saw Alexander for who he really was. In your Helpless video you talked about how Eliza depicts him in this romantic, perfect way but in reality he was all those things Angelica said: a playboy, looking for a rich wife, etc. and she still loved him despite all that. I think that's what makes this song so powerful and sad, its that they are perfect for each other but because she recognizes that, she knows she can never have him. Ugh, gut-punch. Love this song and your react, amazing job.

Angelica recognizes Alex's ambitious, restless nature. "He will never be satisfied" *because* he is WIRED that way-- always reaching for More. And it gets him into trouble, as you must have found out by this time. --By the way. This song is good and has the same emotional effect as the end of Casablanca. The idea that love does not conquer all and that there are other considerations that mean you don’t follow your heart. Tragic goodness. This animatic is as close to perfectly expressing this song as you can outside of the musical.

Historically Angelica was actually already married and the Schuyler sisters had three brothers John Bradstreet Schuyler, Philip Jeremiah Schuyler and Rensselaer Schuyler (named for his mother) oh and their were actually five sisters the other two being Cornelia Schuyler Morton and Catherine Schuyler Malcolm Cochran. So historically this song is full of holes but it is a dramatic retelling and a damn fine one!

mandy Silv You might have read the letters that they wrote to each other but they never met first. Angelica was already married with a second child on the way when she met Alexander for the first time. She met him when Eliza introduced him to her family. Those letters might have been flirty but that doesn’t mean they were in love with each other. Alexander wrote letters like that to other male/female friends to.
