CODY GRUHLKE the third cylinder on this engine is larger than the outside ones so it is a low pressure cylinder that uses exhaust steam from the other cylinders this was supposed to improve efficiency it is quite common on Uk locomotives.

Can you do a heavy haul or passenger speed with the big mallets? As many cars as you dare and as safe as possible? Reason being is im running ho scale and my 2 biggest locomotives are a 4-8-4 northern and a 4-6-6-4 challenger

The 4-12-2 is the only type of wheel arrangement on a steam engine and is operated only by the Union Pacific. 88 were built from 1926 - 1930 by ALCO for the UP. These locomotives were used to increase the speed of freight trains in flat country and were fairly successful, but were maintenance nightmares. Largely because of their use of an inside the 3rd cylinder driving the cranked 2nd driving axle between the frames. Only 1 example has survived into preservation, Union Pacific #9000 is the Prototype of the class. It's preserved at the Rail Giants Train Museum in Pomona, California. It received a new boiler paint job between 2006 & 2007. Tourists can go inside the cab where they can blow #9000’s U.P. star brass 5 chime steam whistle. Now air compressed.

Awesome review as always Eric!!! Man I really love the looks of this engine, the boiler has such a strong muscular shape to it. I also like how far back the whistle is on the boiler allowing lots of separation between it and the main stack up front. This one is definitely on my wish list for sure! Thanks for the awesome vid my friend and have a great one!

We use to call the cylinders "steam chest" smoke stack "chimney". you can see the sand lines from the sand dome. I remember these old Alcos, but there very wasn't many of them due to diesel locomotive change over. Great looking locomotive and a wonderful layout :-)

Thanx sir, seems like he talk about the newest #9000 but we never know what people can do with tracks or whatever on their layout, just fun to have an honest opinion from an hall of famer like you sir Siegel who shows lot of things on their own layout. Thanx again sir.

I am glad to see that Lionel got the 3 chuff sounds down. I happen to have the latest MTH 9000 and the chuffing is also correct and it is my favorite feature. If you're talking about the Lionmaster T1. I don't think that's a full scale model. It's scaled down so that it can take O-31 curves. I don't normally buy semi-scale stuff, but if they ever do a full scale T1 I will certainly pick one up! Thanks!

H F McBain it's not a good idea. The 9000 Class locomotives are a pain to work on and with the 4-12-2 wheel arrangement, she can only go around really, really broad curves. So she could only operate in a certain area. Yeah it would be cool if she did run but it's too much of a hassle

You know Eric if you want some new color to your layout you should try to get yourself a Pennsylvania T1 Duplex 4-4-4-4. I have it and it's a great engine and sounds great. Good detail to it and nice paint and you can't see the hole for the whistle steam affect so it really does look like it's coming out of the brass whistle.Great video by the way! Nice engine like the color.

Just a small fun fact. Though the power of these savage monsters were phenomenal, they didn't last that long because maintaining the 3rd cylinder was a nightmare. I think you might know what the maintenance men had to do. If you don't here it is. They had to remove the boiler from the wheels and then separate the wheels from the cylinders. Then they would do the work as needed then put it all back together.

The Santa Fe Guy actually, it was a 4-14-4. Class AA20, if I remember correctly. It was so heavy it broke the track, so they had to scrap it. Such a shame, it was an attractive locomotive. Nothing quite like a Soviet steam locomotive, in my opinion.
