I Was Almost ARRESTED At The Airport

Today I was almost wrongfully arrested for filming in an airport while preparing for a flight to review an airline. I flew from Ottawa (YOW) to Toronto (YYZ) and while I was preparing to review Porter Airlines I was confronted by security for having a camera even though it was a public space!

The Airport LAND is owned by Transport Canada, the terminal buildings are owned and operated by the Airport Authority operating the airport itself. So while the "land" might be public, the terminal can be considered private.

You should file a complaint or worst case consult with an attorney. What YOW claimed is absolutely ridiculous and doesn't make sense at all. It is public space, just like other airports including Toronto and Vancouver.

I never heard of this happening to anyone before. Almost all airports are publicly owned which you can film. I did it back in USA airports and I had no issues.

Weirdly the Plaza Premium Lounge in the US terminal at YYZ has great bathrooms despite being tiny in size. It is way more cramped-feeling, but has the same food and drink options and impeccable bathrooms.

Videotaping in airports specially in the secure areas or in customs or security points is actually a breach of security. The videos could be used by other random individuals for terrorist purposes. Also if one person states clearly that he does not give his consent or authorisation then the recording is illegal.

It happened to me too recently. I took a flight from Hamilton to Halifax with Swoop and I was doing a vlog and an airport employee told me to turn off the camera. He was pretty pissed. Other airport employee saw me and said nothing. Lol. I think it depend on the person. I could be wrong.

It is ALWAYS the person. Because these stories always end the same. Person is told to turn off their camera. Incident goes viral enough that the traditional media picks up his story. Owners/CEO/ higher-ups of said place where the said camera is told to be turn off see the story and the release a statement saying, "we have no such policy...and we are now retraining our employees, so that they know our policy"

If it's the same as other anglophone countries, it's only THEIR regulations that prohibits filming, the actual law allows you to film in ANY public place. It's best if someone who is NOT flying goes back and asserts their rights to film there. That's why they didn't arrest you. But someone must stop them abusing people's rights to film

I am a little late to the party here but ever since Garda World got the contracts for around 40ish airports across the country to do security, they haven't exactly been the greatest people to deal with at a number of airports. Probably about 90% of my interactions with them have been unfortunately sour for no good reason. The Commissionaires were way more honorable and nicer people to deal with before they lost the contracts to Garda in mid-2020.
