Comedians grind for 10 years before most of them get anywhere. I think that anyone motivated enough could find success on KZbin. The question is.... Are you willing to work at it for a few years? Most people aren't. They see a channel blow up and think they can replicate that. What they don't see is the years of failed projects and attempts that person may have had behind the scenes. Might not always be the case but I'm sure it is, more often than not. Great video Eric I really liked it.

So true Jeff. Not fun to hear it takes patience and an immense amount of hard work and failing, but it’s true. No way around it. I agree with you, that if you’re motivated enough and aggressive about improving your craft anyone can make it eventually. So excited for you to see what happens with this channel alongside! :). Thank you man for the thoughtful comment. Appreciate it.

@@EricWen This video resonated with me because I think I am on the right path with the video I am going to drop on wednesday. If it does work it's realistically taken 25 years as a musician and a few years of messing around on KZbin to get there. If it doesn't work, then I just keep trying until I get better.

So glad it could be helpful for you today man! :) I peeked through a couple of your videos - I think if you made your value prop a lot more specific and niched down more it'd probably help your channel a lot. I don't mean niching so crazy specific down to where it feels fake and gross, but motivation and inspiration is pretty broad and makes it almost impossible to stand out! I created a lot of "thoughtful, encouraging" content the past year, and I really stand by that work and believe in it as a cut above the pack! The comments were great! But the channel as a whole was too scattered. "Thoughtful" was so broad, that the audience didn't know what random corner of "thoughtful and encouraging" I was going to poke my head into and speak on every week. I've realized that self awareness is more specifically the type of thoughtful content I like talking about. And more specifically than that, I love helping creators with their communication so that they can help other people. That could be with this mindset stuff or really getting nerdy about writing/analyzing other creators to improve. Thoughtful is slowly getting niched down to something more specific so that the value for the viewer can be more clear every week. (Hope this makes sense) When I watched your videos, I could tell you were a thoughtful guy, really cared and great communicator and had some really interesting stuff to say especially from your perspective as an "older" creator. - but when you yourself described to me what your channel was about - it left me feeling ?? like you basically said you want to help people and talk about things that matter. Which is pretty general? Sorry for the unsolicited word vomit, I hope it could be seen as constructive! Reach out anytime in a message, would love to talk to you more about this!

Dad here, Excellent video Eric. You are absolutely right, the “remarkable” aspects are so important and is the obvious factor in standing out from the “ordinary”. Sometimes we (Royal We), are hesitant to highlight the “remarkable” because we are self-conscious or afraid of what others might think or say. So our “fear” or “apprehension” of sharing what makes us remarkable keeps us stuck in the ordinary. For us, having six blind kids makes us inherently “different” and hence “remarkable”, but if we never share, no one will ever know about our amazing kids. We kept private for almost twenty years, but when someone else shared our story with the world, we recognized the impact we could have on others just by sharing our story, which we thought was quite ordinary, but to others it was remarkable! I guess my point is that we tend to discard what are the remarkable aspects in our lives, or are afraid to share them because it might be construed as “not ordinary”. But that’s it, the definition of “remarkable” IS “not ordinary” and could make the difference in “standing out”.
@EricWen

Ooh your testimony is so good! Love what you said! It’s so true. We often hold back or discount our own remarkable parts of our lives. The amount of times that I’ve been shocked that my “insights” haven’t been obvious or boring or actually been super helpful to people... There is power in sharing. Huge power in it and we have so much more ability to impact than we think. I like what you said about us already knowing what makes us remarkable. As I’ve honed in on the direction I want to develop more on this channel so that I can “stand out”, it’s been funny to see how the clues for what I could do or be were so obvious and there for my whole life. I’ve just been dismissing them too much my whole life just like with your keeping private about your kids before. Wow, what a testimony! Thanks so much for sharing!

Uniqueness is such an interesting way to blow up on KZbin. It’s somewhat unpredictable to me what will be unique to people. For instance, I’ve recently stumbled upon this channel of a guy who owns a laundromat and the main videos of his that have blown up are him collecting quarters from his machines. I think a lot of what can cause something to become “unique” is when it sparks some sort of curiosity. And that can open the door for many things, like from owning a laundromat to snorkeling for stuff at the bottom of a river; from telling people what it’s really like to be a cop to being someone that has insightful things to say.

Simple, because there's way more people on KZbin now than back in 2006 when I started. Back then, you could get thousands of views just by simply posting a webcam video of you talking about whatever with little to no editing. Don't get it twisted, I'm not complaining about it; if anything, having more people on the platform has raised the overall quality of the content on here. One thing I've learned is that what makes content remarkable is in the execution of it. I could make a video about something that's well covered, but if I do it in my own style and put myself into it rather than just trying to hit all of the same beats as a larger Creator, it'll stand out from everyone else because at the end of the day, there's only one you in the world.

You said it so well! I also made content back in the old days on a different channel. So crazy how different things were pre modern algorithm haha! Love this. I love how you encourage people to be real. After spending my whole career making content pre-KZbin and currently, it does boil down to having that “remarkable” aspect to your content. It’s kinda like when watching American Idol and wondering why someone is up there trying out when... while they can hit the notes, or they know how to read music, they still just don’t click. It’s that “remarkability”.

Really good points. I think my takeaway is to look at the 4 pillars is to be real about which ones I am strong in, which I am weak in. The ones I can see the most improvement in should probably be the ones I tackle first. Also, what should I change or focus on to strengthen? I.e. my personality probably won't change much, and I shouldn't change who I am to please an audience, but maybe I could focus on a different aspect of my personality that resonates more.
@EricWen
@EricWen 4 жыл бұрын
Dude you are exactly on the right track. Making this video inspired me to make a follow up video clarifying a couple things about the 4 pillars - your input will help that video be better thank you! Love your attitude and approach to the personality topic. So many others would have said, oh I can't change this, I guess I'm already the best in this category. Your approach is spot on - maybe there's a different aspect of your personality you can highlight more that resonates! We all have so much more to bring to the table than we think. It's daunting at first to realize how much creative thinking and self awareness it will take to truly find that winning formula to be remarkable and the top 5% in each of these four categories...but as I've gone further down the rabbit hole - it's actually really exciting and fun!

@@EricWen I was just going through some old stuff and found this quote by C.S. Lewis. I don't know where it's from, but it seemed relevant. "You will never make a good impression on other people until you stop thinking about what sort of impression you are making. Even in literature and art, no man who bothers about originality will ever be original: whereas if you simply try to tell the truth (without caring two pence how often it has been told before) you will, nine times out of ten, become original without ever having noticed it.... Give up yourself, and you will find your real self."

I'm on the opposite end of the question you posed. I mostly don't do a lot to promote my channel, other than sharing it with friends and family on social media, and any growth that has occurred has been almost entirely random. The reason? Because I don't necessarily feel special or try to stand out. I 100% believe in my messaging, but I'm not a filmmaker by trade and my videos are far from cinematic; all I have to offer is "value" in whatever form the viewer takes from me. I can only assume they find me through social media sharing or maybe the video titles catch their attention in searches, but I honestly don't know. Great video, Eric; it definitely made me think about my channel.
@EricWen
@EricWen 4 жыл бұрын
I think your mistake is when you said - "all i have to offer..." You definitely have much more to offer than you think, despite not being "cinematic" or a "filmmaker". I guarantee if you thought about it long enough, you could make a list of at least 10 things you've got to offer from your story/experience/pov/thoughts that would blow my mind and could really stand above the herd. I know growth isn't a priority rn for your channel so don't over think it! But yeah...don't cut yourself down so early, my friend. I know as an outsider looking in, I and your audience probably see stand out qualities in yourself that maybe aren't so obvious to you. it may be naive, but i think if we almost all of us have an opportunity to be in the "top 5%" in each of these categories, if we know ourselves well enough and know how to present ourselves in a way that really makes our strengths shine.

really good breakdown! Question. What are thoughts on pure LUCK when it comes to all this ? I thinks it is very true that the harder your work, the luckier you get, but I absolutely embrace the fact the luck plays a huge factor in success...

Luck definitely plays a role but much mch smaller than I’ve thought the more I’ve gone along. :) it’s more like the smarter you work and the more you learn your craft and don’t settle/complain, the path to lucky lightning strikes becomes clearer and clearer. That’s how it’s felt for me! I’m not sure i believe in 100% pure luck! It hasn’t seemed very true in what I’ve seen or at least with anything long term! For instance was the peter Cody collab pure luck...I don’t really think so!

Hi Eric - I’m a new subscriber after hearing about you on the Days of Swedish and French channel. Great videos btw 😀 After your 4 main factors , what’s your opinion on the importance of production quality?
@EricWen
@EricWen 4 жыл бұрын
It helps for sure! But your audience can still connect and resonate without nice lighting/camera etc so I wouldn't focus as much on that as story/connection/feeling delivered! :). I've found the production quality improves slowly over time, but the audience will stick with you with whatever (sometimes fancy editing, sometimes more stripped down/basic, audio/video mistakes, phone footage) if you build a strong connection with them and trust that you're going to say something thoughtful!

Eric Wen great I agree with you - that the actual essence of the content is paramount, but yes it certainly doesn’t hurt a video to look and sound good lol. Tbh I’m sometimes put off by over the top production editing and hype presentation - it makes me feel I’m being ‘dumbed down to’. That said, it probably reflects my age and other factors

I think I actually gave too much value and had to take a big step back. I had hundreds of videos, some 30minutes long and I had upwards of 1 million views total. But I was actually homeless and got nothing back... :( Other than the, "oh look I created comment"... dude... we need money... Some people are so good at asking for Patreon supporters and getting it, but my channel was demonetized and I suffered for it.

Wow that's a really interesting story. I'm sorry that happened to you. That's genuinely really tough - money with creation is so taboo but so necessary! Curious how you personally decided to do to step back and create other options/boundaries/opportunities after that happened!

@@EricWen Demonetization and shadow banning on KZbin has actually been very common. I have people who message me asking when they will get monetized, and I mostly said don't even worry about it... A channel can get demonetized at any moment, so being monetized does not all of a sudden mean you are making money, but I am hoping KZbin will improve on that. To step back, I started focusing more on the enjoying my content and connecting with my audience, rather than just providing them with advice and information. I did more Vlogs and more personal content. I actually love sharing educational information, so for the first few years, my channel was like an iron machine of just pumping out more information to my audience... But then there was no connection, and even in trying to mention that I was struggling financially, I think there was just some degree of shock and disbelief... they weren't used to hearing me talk about myself at all, so I think it was just kind of weird for them to hear me do it when I actually needed their help. So right now I am still in a weird twilight zone where I try to figure out how I can share information in an effective way without becoming a slave to what I do. I am also debating how much effort I should put into KZbin, versus Facebook, my website, etc. After the financial setbacks I have faced, I definitely understand how important money is. Anyway, I probably sound like a grumpy old KZbinr, but I appreciate your tips nontheless and if you want to keep old KZbin hags like me in mind for your next video, feel free. xD

I totally get what you mean! I'd really advice trying to introduce your personality! It's one of the best assets you've got - check out the difference in engagement and success with Hevesh5 and Flippycat. Both do high quality domino building content, both have done it for a long long time. The one that put themselves in their content has had explosive growth and engagement. Glad this video could be helpful for you today!
