Erie Mining F-Unis - Episode 60

Erie Mining Company in Northern Minnesota, had some great looking F9 A-Units in the operation, which they paired up, to increase pulling power, with B-Units. Very few B-Units are saved anywhere, but at the Lake Superior Railroad Museum we have an A and a B, from the now gone, Erie Mining.

Some B units cannot be moved without a controlling unit attached, but most have some simple controls inside, and often a side window at that control station. For example, B unit versions of the EMD FT with conventional couplers had a fifth porthole-style window added on the right side only for the control station. Other models used existing windows. Great video, thanks for sharing.

My great grandpa worked for the Erie mining company so this was very fun to watch

Thanks for the video. Great information about the Erie Mining Company. I recently came across a pair of Erie Mining locomotives #7201/7202 (RS-11s I think) in southern New Jersey and was curious about their origin. They're parked with 3 Alco FAs at at sand plant in the middle of nowhere. Hopefully they'll get some TLC soon.

I remember when LTV closed down. I was working for a company that made conveyor belts for them among other places. We lost our asses in sales and were forced to layoff 300 out of 500 people. Business picked up a bit but never back to the level it has been. We changed hands about 12 times from 2000 to 2017 by then I left the company and as of December 2021 the whole plant shuttered and moved production to Poland and Germany sighting not enough mining in the U.S. to justify haveing anything more than a sales office.
