Craig asked the question "what is the point in kicking the can down the road?" I have the answer. The answer is, United are employing the EXACT same logic that they were in the summer. Nothing has changed at all. United are not interested in hiring an interim charity case mgr for financial reasons. They are waiting for someone they deem to be the right fit to come along, and that person hasn't arrived yet. United are a clown show but frankly they are being logical by not firing ETH right now. They have to get the next one right, and if that means waiting another six months and risking not getting a Champions League spot then so be it.

I could almost buy that logic, but the problem is that they effectively doubled down this summer by buying a slew of new players at significant cost. A slew of players that be all accounts are considered average players at best, and all of them were ETH's guys from the Dutch league at one point. If management were truly waiting for the right fit to come along, they would have held off of investing in more players and signing them to contracts, because the new manager (right fit) is going to want to get rid of all of these players. And that will be next to impossible because no one is going to want to buy them!
