Historical review:
"Erika", especially known for its first verse "Auf der Heide blüht ein kleines Blümelein" ("In the heath blooms a little flower"), is a German song written and composed in 1939 by Herms Niel.
It is a German military march popularized by the Wehrmacht troops during World War II.
This song was one of the favorites by the German infantry of the Second World War. The romantic text of the lyrics made the soldiers feel removed from the harshness of war, while the melody was perfectly timed with the energetic marching step of the troops as they sang it.
The lyrics and melody were written by Herms Niel at an uncertain date during the 1930s. It was first published in 1938 by the Louis Oertel publishing house in Großburgwedel.
In the north of Germany there are areas with poor land, not suitable for cultivation, which are called Heide. Heaths grow on these lands, highlighting among them those of the Erica genus. It is these heather fields that inspired Niel to make his song, since being so unproductive, they were used since ancient times as training camps by the German armies.
