Erika Pearce and colleagues at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis challenge previous ideas about T cell metabolism by showing that activated T cells switch from oxidative phosphorylation to aerobic glycolysis not to promote proliferation; but instead to augment the production of the antimicrobial protein IFN-γ, which is regulated by the glycolytic enzyme GAPDH.
