My wife has a habit of buying plants and letting them die so I've taken it upon myself to learn about the plants in an effort to rescue them. Being a hopeless newbie, I took to the internet where I learned about the dangers of overwatering. As a result I've become a little paranoid about watering and it's frustrating not knowing when to water. Needless to say I'm really happy I came across this video. Thanks Erika!

Here's a little cool pearl of info just for fun! Those moisture meters use the salts in the soil to read the moisture. So if you add salt into a cup of water, it'll read as super wet.
@ErikaLodes4 жыл бұрын
So that’s how it reads the moisture!! I knew it had something to do with salt lol, thanks for the insight 😌

@Zhdun643 жыл бұрын
i thought it measured electrical resistance since water is a conductor? so less resistance means more moist
@wilurbean3 жыл бұрын
It's a galvanic cell, a battery. Batteries use two dissimilar metals (copper, alkalines, lithium, lead, etc) and an electrolyte (salt water, acid, etc). The meter will have more or less electrical flow depending on water content.

Don't put the moisture meters in a glass of water. It can't damage it and never read correctly again.

I find my moisture meter really useful but at the same time very inconclusive a lot of the time. Depending on the spot you hit, you might touch a root which will screw up the reading, and if you use soil mixes with perlite, orchid bark and such it's actually hard to find a spot that gives you a good reading.

FYI: I had the darker green meter for a couple of years. Used primarily for moisture, and didn't care too much for the pH probe; which coincidentally broke last summer, but did not affect the adjacent moisture probe nor readings.

Getting it wet doesn't hurt it. You should not leave it in water, but you do need to clean it off. I know you use alcohol to clean it in between using it in plants because you don't want to spread diseases if one of your plants gets sick, but I am pretty sure you can rinse dirt off with water. They do need to be cleaned.
