Erin, The Impatient Gardener, came to Northwind recently to give a talk on incorporating annuals in a perennial garden. She was lively, informative, and engaging as only she can be. And the audience braved below-normal chill and steady rain so thanks to all of those who attended!

Love Erin’s channel and this was great info. I have Nicotiana and Crichton Honey Dahlia because of Erin. For those larger Dahlia’s I bought green tomato cages and once the dahlia gets about 3-4 ft tall you don’t notice them and it takes away the staking chore.

100% agree with everything Erin said, but I’ve already been influenced by her over on her channel 🙃 I never saw the use of annuals, but that was because what I was finding lacked interest or was expensive. But starting from seed opened up my world when it comes to annuals, since you have so much more variety. Unfortunately I haven’t had success with salvia argentea, but I was able to start clary Sage this year and I’m loving the big, quilted leaves. I’m proud to say I finally started verbena bampton from seed this year! I hope they hang on! Thanks for the talk, Erin knows her annuals! For semi-shade, browalia is a nice one.

Awesome video and im enjoying the vids of Roy's garden design at Erin's home. Wanted to mention thar rudbeckia hirta (annual) is a fabulous self-sower! With the fancier cultivars, you never know what the self sewn offspring will look like. Sometimes the straight yellow, oftentimes some version of the fancy varieties. And the more generations removed the the original, the more of the straight species you'll get. R. Hirta will sow into any location but are easy to recognize and remove (transplanting is a risk). I leave a few in the cracks of my brick walkway along the edges too. Great plant for cottage gardens.
