Interesting question! Unfortunately, I am not currently aware of a way to create two different separators, even if your footnotes restart for each section. If I find a solution, I will be sure to post something about it. Thank you for watching!

Great question! First, create a dotted line in your text using the dot symbol from the Symbol dialog box. Copy that line. Then, select the separator line as shown in the tutorial. Delete it and paste the dotted line you just created. Thank you for watching!

is there a way to modify the automatic superscript numbering in Endnotes? I want the numbered reference numbers within the running text to be superscript but I want the numbers in the Endnotes to be regular size (not superscript) is this possible?

Thank you so much for watching! You can manually remove the superscript format from the number in the endnote without affecting the endnote number in the text. However, I am not currently aware of a way to automate this process because both numbers rely on the same style. If I find a solution, I will be sure to document the process.

Hello, thanks for the video. I have a question. I want to use endotes that contain the complete reference, and not a bibliography. However I can only get the endnotes to display in a shortened style that doesn't contain the entire reference. The style I am using is Chicago. Would you happen to know whether there is a way to change the display of the endnotes so that they contain the full referenc? Thanks K

Thank you so much for watching! As of right now, the only workaround I can think of is for you to use the endnote button to manually insert the entire reference rather than using the references from the Source Manager. Good luck!

I am new to using footnotes (but pretty good with Word overall). I have a document that I just put endnotes into. I now want to put some notes at the end of the document. I cannot put a page break in after my last endnote. Also, I can't get the "NOTE" heading to be able to be a "level" and show in my navigation pane. Help?

To place content after your endnotes, first create a section break and then change the endnotes from End of Document to End of Section in the Footnotes and Endnotes dialog box accessible through the dialog box launcher in the Footnotes group in the References tab. Thank you for watching! When you create a superscript by selecting "Insert Endnote," it is already linked to the note you manually write in the endnote section at the end of the document. (Double-click the superscript to jump to the note.) However, I don't believe there is a way to use the footnote tools in combination with the citation tools. The format for citing a movie quote will depend on your style guide. Best of luck!

That is a great question! These steps are only for PC. However, I will cover this topic in Word for Mac in the future. In the meanwhile, you can modify the style by selecting the footnote number and then selecting the Styles Pane button in the Home tab. From there, select the "a" or down arrow at the end of the text box that says "Footnote Reference." And then select Modify Style. Best of luck!

I am using Word in OfficeSuite Home and Business that I just purchased the other day. Among the menu items, there is no References menu item that I can click on to create and change the endnote from a format of roman numerals to just numbers. How can I do that when in Word 2021 in OfficeSuite Home and Business 2021 there is no References menu to click on?

Thank you for watching! The References tab should appear in your ribbon by default. However, Word can certainly have glitches, so you can add it back manually by right-clicking in an empty area of the ribbon (by the buttons, not up by the tabs) and then selecting "Customize the Ribbon." From there, select References in the Main Tabs menu on the right side of the Word Options dialog box. And then select the OK button. Best of luck!

Hi Erin, I have a lot of footnote is my work (more than 1000) And on the end of every footnote text there should be a full stop. However, sometimes I forget them and even if I review the footnotes I might miss some of them. Furthermore, it takes a lot of time to look at all these footnotes. Hence, I was wondering whether there is a way how I can add full sops at every end of the footnote text? Thanks

Thank you for watching! I'm not aware of a workable method to add an ending period in the scenario you describe. However, there may be a macro that will perform this function, so you may want to do some searching on the web...but, always be careful with macros and only use them on a backup copy of your file because things can go sideways pretty quickly. Thank you for watching! Several factors can cause the endnote numbers to get out of sync, so I'm afraid I can't identify the source of your issue. However, if you select and right-click the first incorrect endnote number before the note (not the number in the body of the text), you can select Note Options from the shortcut menu. Then, enter a new number in the Start At text box in the Footnote and Endnote dialog box. After selecting Insert (not Apply), the subsequent notes should be correctly renumbered. So, actually, my problem is that the endnotes seem to be correct, but in the text there are two "3s' and then I skip down to 27 and 28 and those two repeat. I also have a couple of spaces between different numbers in the endnote area that I can't get rid of. Most disconcerting. Thank you.

I trying to get different styles of foot note numbering. The first foot note I want it to be a roman numeral, and then the next foot note I want it to start with the normal number 1. How the heck do I do that?

That is an interesting question! To begin, turn on the Show/Hide button (which looks like the paragraph mark) in the Home tab so you can see your formatting. Then, select the in-text footnote number that you want to change. Next, select the References tab and then the dialog box launcher in the Footnotes group. Then, select a new choice in the Number Format menu and select the Apply button. When the new formatting is applied, the number will probably move to the next line. To correct this, place your cursor at the start of the first section break(which Word will automatically insert in order to allow the second footnote format) and press Delete on your keyboard. This does not work anymore. There are no arrows at the lower right corners of the reference in word desktop. I need to change the roman numerals that appear at the front of the endnote to a regular number (1, 2, 3...) There are no options to change it anywhere.
