Messi had great calendar year stats too. PSG underperformed in the Champions League, but Messi had a ridiculously productive season for the club still. Haaland scored more goals, but Messi had an insane amount of assists. And of course, the world cup. It was close for sure, but it really boils down to what you think is harder to win CL or WC. Most people and players still consider the World Cup to be the ultimate goal and the most prestigious to win, so given his performance in it, be pretty hard to give Haaland the nod considering how close they were in goal contributions and everything else for the season. Messi's advanced stats were also just completely bloody mental as usual too all year. Since it's a best player award, and not simply about the most goals, it does seem pretty obvious Messi edges it with his total performances and the world cup run. But Haaland probably has a death grip on it for the foreseeable future because he's on a stacked team, is a complete monster at scoring goals and in the most hyped league right now. Unless Man City really fall apart or he gets hurt, hard to picture anyone else getting in the next couple seasons

I think if it was a treble vs a domestic cup and a world cup that's a tougher call for a player or a fan. (Probably still honestly giving the edge to world cup, but we've hit the point where you at least pause to think about it.) But I don't think many people would have to think about it when choosing to win the league and the world cup over a treble. Important to remember that ballon d'or are never for the best player of the year, its a journalist opinion based price for other criteria than being "best". To win means you have created most awe that grab attention from most news outlets. Sure Haaland scored many goals and won a lot of trophies, but when the moment of attention in the finals was there and news outlets paid attention, he didn't dominate. Messi did in the WC with all the attention it brings and was a key figure in the final as well. That's why he won and that's why ballon d'or is not really a best player of the year award. I'm not hating on the price, nor Messi, but it's how it is and have always been and I would prefer if people understood that.

But he says nonsense, because currently it is the best player who must be rewarded, whereas before it was the best of the team which won the biggest competition of the year. So yeah Iniesta should have won with the former criteria and Haaland should have won with the actual. The problem is that voters don't follow the rules. Respectfully, while Messi had an amazing world cup, he was NOT the best player year round. The Ballon D'or is based on player performance during the calendar year. While Messi (and other players such as Enzo Fernandez and Julian Alvarez) was amazing for those 4 weeks, he was far from the best player for the other 11 months. Erling Haaland 100% should've won the Ballon D'or, giving his consistency and great performances *year round* (Man City treble, first UCl for the club, Premier League top scorer, etc.).
