I was in North Donegal attending ia course. I fell in love with the pople and the wild beautiful scenery. One Saturday a group of us climbed Errigal. When we reached the summit, the 360 degree views simply took my breath away. I've been in 20 different countries since but that was the standout moment as far as beautiful scenery is concerned!

Hope to get back to Ireland and especially Donegal soon. Love the video. The air we stand in often gets very calm at sunset and sunrise due to temperature inversion. At sunset, the ground cools much faster than the air, so the air closest to the ground ( where you are standing) becomes colder than the air above it and it becomes difficult for the faster moving air above to mix with the colder air you are standing in. The effect is that you sense no movement, quiet.

Stephen, thanks for always being so open and honest. It’s nice to know that the pre-video depression isn’t as uncommon as i was imagining. Your films are marvelously shot and brilliantly produced but I do have 1 complaint. You’ve made it impossible for me to see a sheep without hearing your “Hi Sheep” in my head! The colours…the layers….the textures…the anticipation! What a toastie!😮 Great video Stephen. You take me places I have been, places I am even familiar with, and you make me want to go back and next time see for myself some of what you capture for the screen. With Errigal I think it’s the loneliness and the silence. I feel I was with you, even to the extent I got the feeling it was me getting back to the cosy van as the light faded. Looking forward to part two.

I'm from Derry. Camped in both Wicklow and Glenties (near Errigal for those unfamiliar). Both are amazing places. Donegal is more rugged and exposed as you see here. Wicklow is greener, softer and more... I want to say intimate ... more enclosed, like being in held in cupped hands. I'd encourage any outdoors person to come and explore. Especially when we get a dry spell where the clouds shift away to let us see the land.

I know that inertia condition. It manifests itself often, in my life. I loved model airplanes as a boy. The more I wanted a certain model, the longer I'd have to leave it in my room, unopened. More common than we think, perhaps?

Fantastic video! I must visit Ireland, you're showing us incredibile landscapes and trekking routes! I also sometimes get very grumpy even a bit angry for some reasons when I start one of my video projects, somehow it seems as a lot of effort for nothing or I'm already displeased but the results, but at the same time I really love shooting new videos and editing them. I think it has something to do with the creative process, it's a lot of rubber banding our brain! 😁

As a channel who has filmed over 300 sunsets in the past year, it is very rare from the wind to STOP at sundown and very common that the wind picks UP speed when the sun disappears. I think it has something to do with the sudden temperature difference.

Dude as always I love your films and more and more the last while, honestly and fun the way films should be, This one more as I’ve filmed races and ran up there and back down with hand held cameras while drone up doing its magic & me with action camera while running 😅 just thinking about it now seems stressful 😮something I don’t miss and that was a paid job… #multitasker 😅 and other times racing I never got to fully enjoy the experience so thinks for giving me this. But what you say about stage fright or whatever it’s called I get this lots and just can’t be bothered filming anymore !! Part of me wants my own freedom…… to fully appreciate my own boat life and off grid life style and filming so maybe it’s just normal …. I don’t know really still working this out…. but what I do know as an artist I get and still have “artist block “ holding me back from enjoying painting for the joy of it and I think that joy was taken from me when people started to want more of my art… again I don’t know but long as we can get into nature life is always worth the art.. keep up the great work as always and maybe we can meet up w _ it became like a job and maybe I don’t want that job and want more a hobbyist lifestyle? Ill what’s app up as planned a gravel bike wild camp cycling tour in mid October up north and not sure if I will film it yet… Let’s see…. But maybe we can meet along the ways… Peace 😊

Great video as always. What you're describing is anxiety. I have it pretty severely. Sometimes to the point of panic attacks. Glad you're able to work through it. It has, in the past, caused me to give up some client work. It's not fun.
@StephenJReid
@StephenJReid Жыл бұрын
Yeah I think so, I started feeling like that on some jobs about 5years ago. And yeah once on a big project I think I was borderline panic attack. I like to tell myself it's a good thing, because it means I care about the work. Which is kinda true because I never feel like that on jobs I'm not interested in. But also like you, I do now avoid certain kinds of project for that reason. Hope you find a way through it! Dunno if this will help you but on client jobs I remind myself that what I'm doing doesn't really matter in a broad sense. I'm just helping a business sell something, I'm not doing surgery or saving lives. Doesn't mean I don't take the work seriously, but I need to realise it's not serious work.

@@StephenJReid One of the best pieces of running advice I've heard is that it's not motivation that you need, it's discipline. You have to tell yourself that it doesn't matter whether you want to do it or not, you have to do it. I've had dozens of runs that I didn't want to do, but I never regretted a single one of them. I came back feeling like I'd battled with my will and won. The whole exercise would almost seem masochistic were it not for the fact that you know that at the end of it all you'll be glad you did it. I know what you're discussing isn't running Stephen, and I'm probably trivialising hugely, but I wonder if there's something similar at work here.
@StephenJReid
@StephenJReid Жыл бұрын
@dallan7740 what keeps me going is that I treat it like a job when I’m making a video. I’m here to do the job, I just have to do it even if I don’t feel like it, because it’s my job. With running I used to have a lot more discipline, trained for hours on the road, hurting the entire time. Because I was motivated to get a new PB. I’ve totally lost that discipline on the roads, I don’t care now, PBs are meaningless really. So I need different goals now.

I've been doing my podcast over 4.5 years and I still feel like I sometimes don't want to start doing research for an episode. I sometimes feel stressed over it too. But I always talk myself into and it turns out ok. I believe it's part of the human condition. Things that really matter to us cause us the most stress. Until the next close up shot showing the object was a mike,, I thought it was a superhero shirt. You also obviously have an eye for color given your color grading in your compositions. You definitely like red, but I’m left to wonder if you chose a bright blue backpack for additional contrast rather than a complimentary or same color to coordinate your adventure wardrobe? 3:25 - That looks incredibly…..healthy. Superb presentation. Not enough to convince this American that I should give that a go. Incidentally, your country is incredibly scenic and beautiful. Oh trust me, that was not a healthy toastie 🤣 A LOT of butter and cheese. yeah I deliberately wear a red coat sometimes for the contrast, although not always. And yes I thought the blue backpack would contrast well too. It's a new backpack I'm testing from Moment and they offered me blue or black. I do quite like heavily saturated, sometimes overbaked colours. I'm always having to pull back a bit on it because not everyone likes that look. I think people should wear more colours, a lot of filmmakers and photographers just wear black and it's borrrring!

Lovely video, the sunset shots was nothing short of mastery. Thanks for your candor. I recognize the sense of stagefright all to well. I almost quit making videos because of the same feeling since it only got worse when I started editing. Today I'm thankful that I pushed through that sense of discomfort. I don't know if you alreday got the answer to why the wind dies down at sunset... but it's because the temperature difference between land and a large body of water. In daytime the sun warms land faster than water and you get a seabreeze, around sunset land and water have the same temperature since land cools of much faster and the breeze dies down at the equlibrium. During the night when land drops even further in temperature you get a landbreeze in the other direction. Rinse and repeat. Cheers!

To be clear: I was referring to the summit view and not the view of the hole in your shorts. Stephen, the most important comment you made in the video was “it was worth it.” When I have the depressive inertia (great phrase, btw), that’s when I focus on the process and not the result. The tough part is trusting myself enough to accept that the process will get the result. The fact that you didn’t return to the van, the strength it took to overcome that moment allowed you (and us, thank you) to see that glorious sunset. Much appreciated, friend. Always much appreciated.

Last thing from me: can you add the “Thank you” button that allows us to donate to the channel? It’s be great to buy you a coffee or otherwise donate to the channel. Thanks!

Thanks Chad, glad you enjoyed the video 🙂 Trust the process 100%! So I do have Super thanks enabled on the channel and it's on other videos. But I can't monetise this video thanks to using 4secs of Willie Nelsons "on the road again". I could mute it, but I'm leaving it in for now as it fits the flow of the video, but I means I'll make $0 in ad revenue from this one. I might mute or trim it out later but don't want to compromise the viewing experience of regular viewers.

Thank you for your honesty. I think there is many of us that feel that way and not necessarily only in regards to filming. Ever time i go for a hike (or most times ) it takes me hours to get ready...not because it takes me hours but because i keep feeling like cancelling ..Once i am out on the mountains or in the forests I love it but getting there is the mission. And also thank you for bringing us along for the wonderful sunset and views.
