Full title and abstract:
Error Awareness in Acquired Apraxia of Speech: A Missing Element of Assessment and Treatment
Acquired apraxia of speech (AOS) is a neurogenic disorder of speech motor programming that is characterized by speech sound errors, slowed rate of speech production, and prosodic disruptions. Awareness of one’s own speech errors was long-considered a clinical feature of AOS. However, this notion of relatively intact ability to self-judge errors had little empirical support. This presentation will address the limited evidence base concerning error awareness in AOS. Our recent findings indicate that persons with AOS vary greatly in their ability to identify their own speech errors. Additionally, our preliminary research suggests an association between error awareness and treatment response. The concept of error awareness is also potentially important in furthering our understanding of speech production features of AOS such as stability/instability of repeated productions. Our paradigm for evaluating error awareness will be presented and the need for further research will be discussed.
