It is a very old track. On New Year’s Day 1908, Oregon Electric trains began operating between Portland and Salem. The Oregon Electric’s 122-mile Willamette Valley route was Oregon’s longest electric interurban railway, and many of its trains served Portland suburbs. A dozen trains a day catered to commuters, students, and shoppers in Hillsboro, Forest Grove, Beaverton, Wilsonville, and Tualatin. On weekends, reduced-fare excursions

The sound is the best part of this- all the squeaking, rattling and banging of the rail cars passing by so close. Sounds great on a surround stereo system. People who live in apartment buildings should play this at full volume. Your neighbors will think they are going nuts. ;-)

You've got a real knack for setting the scene before the action begins. A big part of the fun for me in watching train vids is the views it gives me into other places, whether parts of our USA unfamiliar to (and distant from) me, or others as far away as China or Africa or Australia (tons of great Down Under train and scenery vids on You Tube).

People gave this a "thumbs down"? Why? How? this is all good!
@Edge2119012 жыл бұрын
This is amazing. This looks like a fairly heavily traveled street. You would think the railway would build dedicated tracks next to the road or build a bridge or tunnel rather than having to share the road with cars. There must be a space issue not allowing that to happen. Not to mention safety issues. How many runs per day are made on this line?
@EdWittenable10 жыл бұрын
I enjoy watching videos of trains running down a busy street. I always wonder if the railroad was there first or the street. It seems like a bad idea to combine a railroad with cars and trucks but it looks cool.
@64843739 жыл бұрын
EdWittenable I guarantee 100% of the time the railroad was there first. Even if the road is next to the railroad track the train was probably there first. All the train routes that are used today are the same routes that were built 150 years ago. New tracks, same route. What usually happened was when cars started to become popular, they built roads to towns that railroads already went to, so they just built them next to the tracks, or in rare cases, on them.

This is a great video. Besides the basic appeal to railfans, it helps to show why we need to have more cargo transported by rail - especially in the New York City area. Even if they could have got by with fewer than 4 engines, that one train of 108 cars replaced about 430 trucks, which is an environmental plus.

The South Shore Passenger Rail Line that runs from South Bend Indiana to Chicago has part of the line that runs though the streets. The South Shore Line street runs through Michigan City. Wikipedia said there is no longer a train platform there but people still wait for a train there. The station is more like a tram station without the station.

Running down the middle of streets was very common. Back when the railroads were new and being built in the late 1800s, when the railroad came to a town, they generally just laid the tracks down the middle of the main road. Later, after the turn of the century, the tracks started being relocated to the outskirts of town because people found that it was a nuisance and a hazard. There are only a few of these relics of history left today.

Evans, how long is that section of street running? You had your video camera zoomed in pretty tight at the beginning. I also enjoyed the surprise at the beginning where you see the train at the crossing way down the street not realizing that because of some trees blocking the view, you are in fact watching the P & W heading down the street. It re-emerges from the trees down the street from you. Great job! I love street running!

So a car hits wagon No 83 and the train driver just keeps on going because he is half a mile away and no local supervision? As a Brit and used to our very restrictive loading gauge I marvel at the height and length of American freight. Sort of typical of the country itself but this just seems very dangerous. Just saying.
@CullenRick10 жыл бұрын
Other countries are, perhaps, a bit more capable of taking responsibility for themselves and spotting the giant train running down the road?
@1chish10 жыл бұрын
I can only speak for the UK and there is only one place trains run along a public road and that was closed some time ago ... I guess its all to do with local custom and history but that does look very dangerous from this side of The Pond ..
@CullenRick10 жыл бұрын
1chish You are right, in that in the UK we have become incapable of managing risks or taking responsibility for ourselves. The rest of the world just shows us how babyish we've become.
@1chish10 жыл бұрын
Richard Cullen No I wouldn't agree there. I think if anything we 'over-manage' risks and the 'Elf & Safety' mob have become unnecessarily powerful and load extra costs to everything but at least we take personal safety seriously. I would agree about people tending to look after their 'rights' rather than their 'responsibilities'. For me the latter comes before the former....
@64843739 жыл бұрын
1chish These street running places are rare, you only find them if you know where they are. That being said the reason they exist is because they paved over the track that was already there. It would be more dangerous if the trains traveled faster down these roads but they are restricted to something like 10mph. And with Cars being able to stop and go way faster than a train, as long as the driver isn't an idiot they should be ok.

There seem to be some very unsubtle changes in this area between when this video was taken and now. At least according to Google Maps and from the angle I get on that site compared to the one you have on you video. For one there seems to be more trees in your video and the track seems a little more curvy. Also the track that appears to come off that main line to the right before that tiny bridge shows up is missing on Google maps. Even the bridge is labelled differently on Google Maps then in the video. Either a bit has changed in Salem in the last 5 years or Google is inaccurate IDK !!!
