As a kid I would go on trips with my family to Vancouver WA to visit family and we always take Amtrak cascades.

I kind of liked seeing the MAX light-rail train in the background. The Cascades goes slow for several miles because it first runs across the Steel Bridge, then takes a sharp turn before running through southeast Portland, where it crosses a street every block or so. To go any faster would require the (prohibitively expensive) construction of a new dedicated track on a new right-of-way.

Crochet Geek @tjw1963 I made a typo and should have put, Was the car at the end of the train another engine or a funny caboose? ____________ The vehicle at the very end of the train was the only engine. The vehicle immediately ahead of it was the baggage car. The vehicle at the front was an NPCU--Non-Powered Cab Unit--which has a control stand but little else, as it's not needed to move the train.

Great video - thank you. The articulated (lightweight?) coaches don't look anywhere near as tough as the locomotives though! Have you ridden on the train? I've always wanted to do the run between Portland and Vancouver in British Columbia, but England where I live is too far away and fares are very expensive! Thanks for being there to film the train - makes up for me not being able to come to see it myself.

I never liked how the Cascades trains mostly use genesis units in phase 5 colors instead of the original F59s. You think they'd at least paint a few genesis units in Cascades colors to retain consistency.

How come they don't use the Talgo power units? Or are they electric? Amtrak should buy the other two train sets and spare cars, then electrify the line from Vancouver to Eugene.

It's very possible but the tonality of that K5 is so antique it might very well be 80s or 90s. My guess is Early-90s or Squaretag.

Wish Amtrak had Business Class on the long distance trains, such as Coast Starlight. Bedroom space is limited, and when I travel last minute, I'll fly before I go straight coach. I travel alone, and having to sit next to a stranger between Seattle and Los Angeles isn't gonna happen! If Amtrak would wall off the last half of the last coach with large biz class seating, I would give it a try, and pay more for the semi-privacy. I wouldn't expect the same complimentary meals as sleeper class. Perhaps just a coffee card would do. A single traveler in coach is subject to being moved around to accommodate couples and families. A first class coach section would be well received, I believe.
