At San O this week there were a lot of those cone shaped shells. It seems they show up around the time all the sea weed gets washed ashore. They are beautiful shells. Looks like a beautiful place and a great time. Glad you were able to go with your mom too! So true about things working out! When I surf with my daughter and son in law it's always on a weekend (they work & I'm retired) so the risk of big crowds is high. We always find a spot and have a great time no matter what!

Hi Eryn, I really enjoy your videos. Thanks for taking us along and sharing. I am posting a "little PSA" here. A lot of people don't know but just as there are Leave No Trace ethics for camping, same applies for beaches. Taking shells disrupts ecosystems, especially taking the spiral shells, leaves crustaceans without protection. They actually need those shells to survive. I too grew up taking shells for collecting when I got a chance but then I saw various documentaries on marine life and felt bad but I know better now.

Love the vlog ❤ I wonder if the island is doing something about the cat population. Cats are known to be very predatory, specially in islands where ecosystems are more fragile. Most of the extiction of endemic species on islands are due to the arrival of cats 😔.

YOur thunbnail shows rows of tetrapods dumped on coral reefs, not exactly paradise for anyone sensitive to the destruction of coastal environments in Japan, via pork barrel public works. The highly corrupt "doken kokka" or construction state is omnipresent in most of rural Japan where opposition to such projects seldom exists due to the biggest employer being the state funded mining and cement and concrete industry.
@binker464 ай бұрын
What purpose do the tetrapods have? How do they damage the coral reefs?
@jontakaki5034 ай бұрын
@@binker46 There's a good peer reviewed paper by marine biologist Giovanni Masucci, a marine biologist at OIST (Okinawa Institute of Technology), with the title "Eroding diversity away: Impacts of a tetrapod breakwater on a subtropical coral reef". YOu can google it. HOwever to put it simply, breakwaters create strong currents around their structure and damage the coral reef. One thing Dr Masucci doesn't research in this paper is the impact on water temperatures, which would take more time to study. Lagoons with lots of breakwaters also heat up faster which can be deadly for corals in the summer.
@jontakaki5034 ай бұрын
@@binker46Oh and the purpose? Normally you put them in harbors as break waters. Sadly in Japan, they put them everywhere, even on the coral reef which naturally creates a breakwater outside the lagoon. It makes no sense. One reason they do it is also because Japan builds a lot of seawalls on the beach, and remove the natural dunes. This makes the beach shrink and erode, which in turn removes the natural sand protection the seawalls initially had. The seawalls toe becomes exposed. When this happens, they add tetrapods in front of it and offshore to protect the wall. Then you also have the waves bouncing off the seawall which create salt water and sand blasts inland, during storm surges. Residents complain about it and that too, mobilise the government to add 1000s of tetrapods. These are examples of maladaptation. Instead of restoring dunes and natural resilience, they destroy it and come up with false solutions that have the effect of compounding problems upon problems. However the real unspoken goal is to sink public money into the concrete, mining, and cement industry, which is very powerful in Japan and supports the Liberal democratic party. A revolving door. Prof. Gavan McCormack describes Japan best in his book, The Emptiness of Japanese Affluence : ''The construction state is in some respects akin to the military-industrial complex in cold-war America (or the Soviet Union), sucking in the country's wealth, consuming it inefficiently, growing like a cancer and bequeathing both fiscal crisis and environmental devastation''.
