Thank you. On the day I wrote the comment I - an absolute newbie to classical music - later went to the concert in Berkeley and found out that the part I meant was the 2nd movement of Beethoven's 7th Symphony.

One could develop a serious man-crush on Salonen. He has lots of intelligent things to say about music, the skill to put it into practice and to top if ot could be a former model.

I have worked with him many times. He really pulls together an orchestra into something more tighter and concise than other conductors. It is difficult to explain what he seems to do, apart and compared to other conductors. I am far from someone that could explain differential. Maybe it is just called talent?

IDK what you guys are saying... I think the tempo is fine.... If I was going to conduct, this is the tempo I would conduct it in.... This tempo shows the aggression Beethoven had at the time....

The video title has two different meanings in different languages which is a bit funny. Read it in English and it says "Esa-Pekka Salonen about Beethoven." Read it in Finnish and it says "Esa-Pekka Salonen is Beethoven."

Herrar, Salonen! This bit of music is hard to be the best in. Herbert von Karajan has been there, long long before you, and others!

You can't compare Salonen with Karajan. Karajan belongs to the stream of the old german school, no matter how innovative his vision has been with respect, for example, to Furtwängler or Klemperer. Salonen comes after the "original instruments" period, after the philological reading of music, etc. And his great merit lies exactly in his giving life to a fresher vision of Beethoven, an eye wink to the german school and another eye wink to the more rigorous conducting of, say, Toscanini on the one hand and Harnoncourt on the other. In my opinion he is the best Beethoven conductor of tuday, and he offers the best proposal after the death of Carlos Kleiber (the last significant representative of the old german school). Sorry, but to me he looks much more interesting and enjoyable than Abbado, Barenboim or Thielemann. Sure, nobody can deprive Furtwängler of the first place on the Beethoven podium (followed by Walter and Klemperer), but ... is there a Furtwängler around today?

strange aesthetic glibness. although he understands the centrality of Beethoven. The form is not the narrative; the forms of Beethoven are also trans-formal, trans-empirical, but that's putting me out on the limb....Salonen's grasp of Beethoven is fine, but the elevator just doesn't go high enough...
