I can watch this video any number of times. Love Salonen, his artistry and taste, the beautiful city and the music in the background and the Philharmonia playing! And I love hearing about how learning to just putting the right notes is craft. "No distinction between atists and craftsmen" !

There is no one -- and I mean NO ONE who goes into such depth regarding music -- his compositions or others. He makes it a part of the whole experience to know everything about a piece -- the composer, everything about them and (for lack of a better word) a breakdown of the music score. When I listen to his compositions, I always make sure to read the story behind the music, what it's about and the inspiration. He is an international treasure, one of a kind, a man at the very top in his field. His passion shows in his conducting. People used to go to concerts to listen to music, but when Salonen is conducting, all eyes are on him. You cannot break away from his mesmerizing movements and his incredible emotional tie with the music. Watch the video where he's conducting Sibelius 2 ... he has tears on his cheeks in the second movement. BRAVO SALONEN.

What a touching story... never knew this about Mr. Donatoni's "Esa"... now every time I listen to the piece again I will think about it. Thank you sincerely for the interview.

this is a great talk. Both an homage to Donatoni and to learning how to compose music in the real world. love Salonen's ironic smile.
