Good video, great idea for a common problem especially in winter climates. Details on grease fittings was lacking. If you use a small grease fitting they typically have a 1/4-28 TPI, tap drill size is a #3 drill bit or a 7/32” drill bit. Some of these fittings may have a NPT thread, identified as 1/8. This is a taper tap 1/8 NPT, drill size is 21/64”. Go easy, do not break your tap in hole. Good idea is to remove the steel pin prior to drilling these holes.

Really appreciate the information about the steps. My Suburban has them and they work very well still but I would like to maintain them to last even longer.

Thanks for the tips ErichWholmuth. Wish I saw bit recommendations when I tried this a couple years ago. But I could not get my grease fitting to seat properly in the holes and made a mess with the grease. Not sure my fittings were strong enough to thread the aluminum. Had to give up. I think this process is on the right track. This is a huge problem. Now I am trying to find replacement boards. There seem to be several used boards from 2014-2022 models. Not sure if they will work on the 2011 model. (Can't find any info on how newer model boards can be retro fit to the 2011 year model. I replaced the engine on my 2011 so I plenty of life in the SUV but no drivers running board. Anyone ever take boards from 2014-2022 and try them on the 2007-2012 models?

Do you think that there is a reason to service the motor of the step or if it is not broken then don’t fix it?
@rickwygle3743 жыл бұрын
if i am seeing this correctly you can access the bottom 4 after install as they are facing down however the 2 that you are installing in this video are facing inside that channel that bolts to the truck so how do you access them without removing the running board?
@cadillacdoctor13513 жыл бұрын
Greasing the fittings requires the boards to change positions during the process.

Exactly what I thought the top two will not be excisable. Without removal of running board

I thought that you would have put the grease zerk in the larger portion of the hinge but maybe that is where the shaft normally rotates. Maybe GM should have done this from the factory... Then again it seems we are moving to a zerk free automotive world.

The two grease fittings shown in this video are not accessible once the running boards are installed.

My question is this, actually not a question, just a statement, any one who calls themselves an engineer should have known to put a grease fitting there. Criminal not to have grease fittings there from the factory.

I have the same problem on my ext 07 , what size of niples are those? Good video ¡¡¡
@cadillacdoctor13514 жыл бұрын
Not sure of the exact measurement. They are the same as one would use in your average ball joint. What ever size you use will determine the size of drill bits necessary.

when you screw the running boards back to the the truck how tight the screws have to be?
@evannadeau18915 жыл бұрын
Tight so they don't come loose.

why didnt you add a grease zerk to the actual arm that moves?
@cadillacdoctor13514 жыл бұрын
The pin is press fit into the arm but should be free to rotate in the hinges
