John Carpenter has to be the most underappreciated director in American cinema. I know fans appreciate him, but Hollywood just seems to overlook him.
@IronGoldie3 жыл бұрын
It's funny, there's a quote where he says, in Europe, he's considered an "auteur", I think. He's more highly regarded in Europe, and overlooked here in the US. And, in a weird way, I kinda love it. Not that I think Europe is necessarily better. But that he's so outside the Hollywood norm. I always thought of him as this weirdly "working class" director, if that makes sense. Like, he genuinely understands those themes, and because he and his cast lived it to some extent. Like They Live - Rowdy Roddy Piper admits he was homeless for a while, and using that experience. It's not as detached as Hollywood shit. It feels more like a "pure" Americana, in a weird way.

It's because at the time despite what Hollywood claims. Even to this day the so called Liberals working there have always been conservative with conservative values. All the sex and violence, in these films. The same sex and violence that got lauded by today's "Progressive" Hollywood and the patrons they exploit, was made as a means to protest and shatter censorship rules at the time. Even to this day, Hollywood believes that no one would want to see a movie that's heavily in sex violence political commentary that wasn't conservative or the fake liberal they advertise now. Guys like Romero, Carpenter, Sergio Leone, Argento, Cameron and the like said otherwise.

You know what I've been saying would have saved the last of us 2? Just rewriting and renaming it "escape from new york" and just pretending they did a bad job at actually replicating the city. Seriously, the gameplay and style for it is PERFECT, the way you crawl around, only have a few weapons/items. It's a shame what happened to naughty dog because I can EASILY see a great escape from new york ripoff game(and who cares, let people call it a ripoff, so long as the content is good and the game isn't microtransaction scamcity fans will love it and pay) coming from their studios. Too bad they have to deal with NeIl DrUcKmAnN and his unholy warpath to the Oscar's( I mean come on, just look what a shitshow he's turned them into, it's pretty clear he's just derailed The Last of Us, and Uncharted into PURE AGENDA DRIVEN CRAP(like emotional manipulation using race and sexuality to berate those he hates irrationally and enflame rivalries in his own fandom) all for the sake of getting an HBO series(prediction: it sucks, gets shit fan ratings, and wins every award it possibly can because TLOU2 was simply Neil's way of saying "LOOK HOW GOOD I AM!!!! I LOVE DIVERSITY SO MUCH MORE, I TANKED A GAME DEVELOPING STUDIO JUST TO SHOW THE WORLD!!!!!") I got way carried away. But yeah, if you wanna daydream about an awesome EFNY game, my personal visions have the same engine and playstyles and menus and shit as TLOU2(as much as I hate the story of that game, seriously, excluding just the story the game is phenomenal)

Honestly, this movie still amazes me. Even though the "actual" New York is really just the decaying neighborhood of East St. Louis, it looks totally real and you'd never even suspect it was any other place. If this were done today, it would probably be a combination of location shooting, dressed to appear this way, green screen, and backlot/soundstages. However, East St. Louis at the time actually appeared the way they needed New York to look. There was very little the crew had to do to the location. I don't know if this movie gets enough credit with, not just how good the locations are, but, how this was all pulled off on such a minimal budget. Between the location shooting, to the ultra-realistic matte paintings, right up into the-then futuristic depiction of the United States, Escape from New York is an excellent example of what you can do on such a modest budget. I wish this was recognized more.

Last year there was going to be a classic car show by me that I wanted to go to, but was canceled due to rain with no make up date at the last minute. So instead, I decided to run a few errands. As I was driving around a car was coming towards me in the opposite direction with two small chandeliers on either side of the front hood. I tried to find a place to make a quick U-turn, but it took a while. By the time I came back the opposite direction the car must’ve turned off somewhere. I figured that car had to be going to the show but must not have heard that it was canceled. I spent the rest of the day laughing and saying to myself ‘You’re the Duke - A #1!’ I hope whoever was driving the car sees this so I can give them a virtual high five for being boss ass cool! ✋😎☝️🗽🐍🧠👩🏻🚕🤴🏿
