In the second part of the big install at Red Door Escape Rooms Mark goes over some of the little details that go into finishing the space to add "realism" into the game.

Man that room is coming together great! Love the ancient temple look. Wish I was close enough to play the room. Looking forward to all the stuff from the spaceship room that we haven't got to see yet. Keep up the great work!

Yeah! It feels good to us, too! ...that is, until we realize how much more we have left to do :-D i can't wait to get about halfway through the spaceship. We should get some serious jaw-drop from the client. We built it without any input from them, so they'll have breathing difficulties when they see it... hehehe

I totally know the feeling. We finalized the puzzle you and I chatted about. Everything was done and we went to install it only to find the ceiling we needed to attach it to was concrete. Literally hit a wall...

I make escape room games to play at home. I have fun building the puzzles, but of course, I can’t have huge detailed sets like this when I’m playing in someone’s basement. You are making me wish I had a building to set up in permanently! This is gorgeous work!!

To start with, great job on this escape shop. The textures, detail are awesome and I am waiting in anticipation for the spaceship video. I do have a life, but I am about to open my doors to escape enthusiasts, so this video watching is mandatory. Let me tell you your instructional videos have helped me tremendously. I want to thank you both for having this channel and the wonderful work that you have done putting all this together.

It's great you're getting something out of this! Also, it's really good for the channel to have people (like you) who actively comment. It helps us "patch the holes in the videos", and any questions you ask will benefit everybody. Thanks, Brainstorm, for taking the time :-)

I envision this series becoming one of those super sized, coffee table books. Lots of high rez photos, you guys telling your stories about how the project progresses, etc. Plus, who could pass up a book with the giant sized title of Gratuitous Sets!?! That would stop you in your tracks, right? Great job and please, keep 'em coming!

Totally agree with telling a story using layers. Dirt, moss and vines make the scene. Also agree (and implement ) the screen / clue system rule, it is not immersive. Find a way to keep the illusion within the room. Keep up the great work and can't wait for space next week.

I'll try to put some shots of the finished temple in the "cave room" video. That's another surprise video :-)

Looks amazing as usual. I did a similar themed (aztec) room a year ago and instead of a monitor I made a custom built 60 minute hourglass but I like how you are handling it. On a side note you need to start selling some of your tee shirts. New ones of course not the sweat filled one you are wearing :).
@GratuitousSets7 жыл бұрын
Badass! Did you buy the glass and build a surround? What/how did you do it?If you want a tee, I'll just give it to you at cost or something. I don't wanna try to make a buck selling "gratuitous merch" lol
@KB-yy7zt7 жыл бұрын
Used a glass company to bend the glass to fit my design. It had to fit inside a wall so it was 6 inches deep 24 inches round and rotated 180 degrees. It looked like a large hour glass cut in half.

Hi! How would you recommend keeping your players on track with their time instead of placing a big ugly monitor in the escape room? Like you said, a TV screen does not match the theme of a Mayan temple, so how to they know how much time?
@GratuitousSets3 жыл бұрын
Fantastic question!! Because the client wanted monitors, we just did a faux stone finish on the monitor. We used a photograph of the stone wall behind the monitor and used it as the background for the time display. We did as much as we could with our hands tied but, it's still better than a plain monitor. Under different themes, the monitor can be part of a spaceship status display or, for, say, steampunk, an old pressure gauge can be fitted with a servo motor to simulate rising pressure, or whatever the storyline dictates. 😁

@GratuitousSets7 жыл бұрын
Jungle floor will be leaf litter + ground coconut fiber + cypress mulch. Temple floor will be stencil painted stones (that work will be done by the folks at Red Door) Thanks! :-)
@GratuitousSets7 жыл бұрын
Oh! And there will be a small bridge and water feature in the "Cave Room" walls and floor will be like a natural cave with glistening walls and stalagmites. You haven't seen any of that yet.

Amazing! What is a "glif" in your context? And I hate saying it but, every time I say, "Gratuitous Sets," it sounds more like, "Gratuitous Sex." Pervs, I know you really meant the latter. And once again, you guys are by far the most cerebral KZbin Creators I've come across so far. My vocabulary is improving by leaps and bounds. :0)

Matt HATES puns, but when I thought of Gratuitous Sets, he was forced to concede :-) Sorry I said it so quickly, and with my flu-ridden voice, but the word was "glyph" (a pictographic symbol)

This looks really cool! One question: how big would an escape room like that be?
@GratuitousSets3 жыл бұрын
That one was about 500 sq ft (47 sqM. That's about average in the US. The largest one that I know of is in the works with us. It will be over 800 sq ft or 75 sqM. It will be in Reno, NV

Looking great! Would you be able to share the estimated cost for this buildout?
@GratuitousSets7 жыл бұрын
One BILLION dollars! I'm not sure if Red Door would want me to give out specifics, but all three games, installed, we are SUBSTANTIALLY under 160K. Each game is near 1000 sq. ft.

You guys are dynamite. I'm a high school teacher in Canada, but I've designed escape rooms for my staff. I've always wanted to have rooms that look like the kind you folks build, but it will more than likely remain a hobby for me. What kind of training or education do you have? Are there any books or resources I could pick up to teach myself how to build stuff they way you guys do?

As the video was made a long time ago, I don't know if you will see this comment but we're very interested in creating a room with a stacked stone wall similar to the one here. Could I ask how you made the wall/what materials you used? Or do you maybe have a video up somewhere? The room looks fabulous!
@GratuitousSets3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! The walls were built using a stone made of rigid urethane foam. It's the same stuff we used in the Mayan Mask video which was, i believe, our first video ever! It is not inexpensive. 😃
