I remember this well. Before anyone knew who Celine Dion was. I rarely remembered Eurovision songs but that peformance blew me away that night. Great song, great singer. It was only years later that I found out that great singer was the now famous Celine Dion

I agree. Bring back the live orchestra. It was a great leveller, making it more about the music and song than gimmicks or staging which has become ridiculously overblown now. This is a perfect example of how it should be. Superb live vocal from Celine Dion. A clever stage design in a small space. Minimal but clever lighting. Superb images from RTE Director Declan Lowney whose camera angles, image mixing and sweeping 'jimmy jib' camerawork often following her hand movements - just magic. Fantastic.

@@occono3543 It was indeed a golden moment for RTE when you had a veteran Exec Producer in Liam Miller combined with a talented young director Declan Lowney who must have still be in his 20's when he did this. He of course went on to work on so many other things such as Father Ted, Help, Cold Feet and some feature films, winning Golden Rose and a couple of BAFTA's I believe.

Did you know that the first choice for this song was Czechoslovakian singer Lenka Filipová? The comunists unfortunetly did not allow her to participate so Switzerland tried to quickly replace her with Celiné and it worked. I Am curious how it could have been with Mrs Filipová…

It was Celine's magnetic stage presence, voice and interpretation that made this a winner I think- even if that happened by only one point. Just look at the way she uses the cameras as she interprets all those different 'Vous.....' The song is pleasant , good rather than great I think. Do you think it still would have won with a different singer? Scott's song was really attractive , he sang it well and it is not surprising it did well in the voting- no need to criticize him as some have done here, Celine was the winner.

No it would have struggled with a different singer, and to be honest with many other of Celine's own performances of the same song it would also have struggled, including the soulless recorded version where the third-last line had its lyric altered. As it was, this song only barely scraped the win by a single point as it was a really strong year, but her later career validates the crown ultimately. I think it's her magnetic charm rather than the musical merits of the song that clinch this one. That plus the vocal power and twinkling tone coming through, as the singing itself is very pitch-inaccurate and raw/immature here. But I'm glad she won, the world would not have liked to be deprived of her.

An American won it for the UK before too, ABBA won it for Sweden despite one of them being Norwegian/German by blood, and many others still. The thing being judged here is the song, not actually the singer (well, in theory anyway). The song was considered Swiss-written so that qualifies.

This is a biggest prove of that Eurovision is biggest political thing even in 80s. If this song could be of Turkey's entry, it would around 15th or below. But despite this is Switzerland, the musician of this song is a Turkish person (Atilla Şereftuğ)

OK I do not know the other 2 acts you are mentioning but come on, this is a real stunning vocal performance, she was in command the whole time. She was 20 and came with a confidence, a voice... And elevated a song which is not bad but obviously not a huge masterpiece (even though the lyrics are talking about someone who wants to live a life full of discoveries following adventurous creative people, which is kind of the way she has lived... this aspect makes the song really special and emotional because it was an anticipation of who she would become).
