In this episode we will begin to explore softbody dynamics in Modo by looking at a simple cloth simulation. This lesson covers setup and creation of cloth simulation as an iterative process that will minimize crashes, frustration and produce good results.

Moin, this is a great introduction into soft body simulations - fantastic! If I may add one and a half suggestion: Instead of lifting the cloth mesh up into the air to give it some more "oomph" on collision, try decreasing the default "drag" in the soft body's "force" tab. It usually is set to 4%. This drag helps taming down the jitter that may appear from very tight folds, but it also reduces "naturalistic" behaviour. For most cloth simulations I do I have the drag between 0.1 and 1.2, but never ever as high as its default 4%. Also (that's the .5 suggestion): When lifting the cloth and not adjusting the solver's rate (number of subframes calculated) you increase the likeliness of poke-throughs or penetrations, because the cloth accelerates on its way down. The longer it falls, the larger the "jumps" will be it makes between frames, so the simulation may miss more collisions if the falling speed is too high. So when increasing the distance between the collision objects (cloth and ball/ground), also increase the physics "rate" in the solver to compensate - it may well be that you would not have needed to manually adjust the poke-throughs that way.Marc

Brilliant. Haven't tried yet but what a great tutorial. You're so engaging and explain everything so well. Modo tutorials are so limited. Please post away. Im learning.

I can't find "Number of Clusters" in Modo v14. They parameters are different. Does anyone know what the equivalent is today?

In Modo 11 when I make SubD (1024 polygons) and run simulation- soft body just disappears. Situation keep repeating no matter what.

Thanks for the fun tutorial Ellery... Quick question: I don't seem to have "Static Rigid Body" in my copy of 701 is it named something different in 701? (I'm assuming your running something later...)

I believe that that would be a passive rigid body in 701. I have a Lynda.com course on dynamics that was recorded in 701 that you may want to check out.

Hi Ellery, Great tutorial! How can you convert the dynamics to mesh so I can edit polygons. Thanks!

Does anyone know why my cloth simulation is a ton slower than the one in this video? I followed it exactly to my knowledge and in 120 frames it barely goes anywhere?

3 years later, Modo still suck at cloth simulation. Not even close to Marvelous...sadly :(
