Probably a bit late now, but did you consider doing BMW X3 e83 running gear? The rear of those are pretty much e36/e46 design. And e36/46 share a lot of the components, as in, most have the same OEM part numbers (I'm in the process of bolting in X3 rear upper wishbones onto my e46. Literally bolt in, except the droplinks), but the X3 front subframe allows you to have the choice of 4x4 and RWD just by swapping out sumps and adding the front diff and shafts. Long story short... E83 X3 and E36 front and rear will mate up, but the X3 front will allow all engines dating back to e30 3 series chassis and add capability for AWD if you want it. A 4pot e83 with a snapped timing chain can be had for £500. Add $1000 and you can prob find one with a M54 2.5/3.0 six pot, manual. If you've not started chopping the front off.. there's still time lol There is one more option for 4x4.. e46 "ix" model stuff, but it's much harder to come by in the uk. The "Real OEM" website is great for cross referencing all these bmw parts

I did looking into things like an e82 and the like but according to google the track width was considerably wider than a e36?
@starfox_wr-45e933 ай бұрын
@@Tdevil86 Yeah, looked the numbers too. I think on the x3 the larger track width is mostly due to built in spacers on the hubs and wheel specs. Like I said, the rear arms/wishbones look to be the same length as the e36/46. If they weren't, just changing the upper wishbone for the stronger X3 e83 jobbies would play havoc with the camber etc, one would assume. I'm defo about to find out as they just arrived over the weekend 😁 Worth this mentioning as you wrote "E82" which is the one series, those don't share anything with the e36 suspension design. Much more complex 5-link setup on the rear. Not investigated much about them on the front, but I think the same applies, not able to retro-fit much. They're linked to the e90/91 3series etc, where they completely changed the suspension setup on those generation cars onwards. The models most relevant to us e36/46 guys are.. 3' E36 (11/1989 - 10/1999) 3' E46 (04/1997 - 12/2018) X3 E83 (01/2003 - 07/2006) X3 E83 LCI (02/2006 - 08/2010) Z4 E85 (01/2002 - 08/2008) Z4 E86 (10/2005 - 08/2008) Z4 E89 (01/2008 - 08/2016) And even.. Z1 Roadster (07/1988 - 06/1991) That's where you'll find the most interchangeable stuff. On the Real Oem website e36 is under "Classic" which I think stops the modern parts from cross referencing backwards on part number links. They do seem to link forwards from classic at least to e46 tho. My complete coilover set is from a e85 z4. Bolts right in, shocks, bushes, top mounts, the lot, front and rear. 😁 Some of the little bits such as washers, dust covers, brackets, loom plugs are found in the minis, old 2002tii turbo, V12 7series and so on My x5 shares bits with Range rover. I love playing "The Part Number Lottery" over on Real OEM, you literally never know what's gonna pop up when you click a part# link there 😂

@Tdevil862 ай бұрын
@@frankiewalnuts cosworth isn’t wide enough, you’d need to make it wider to accommodate the 350 stuff if you want decent wheel fitment…
@frankiewalnuts2 ай бұрын
@@Tdevil86 it's only 3 inches wider, given that the escort stock sits within the body... You would need to run spacers to get arch to lip fitment on a stock car... so I hope that 1.5 inches each side will give flush fitment. Then you have wheel choice you can create any amount of fitment with custom offsets... finally you have camber a few degrees negative should finish it off...
@Tdevil862 ай бұрын
@ oh, don’t get me wrong, it can be done, it just wasn’t for me, the tolerances on wheel fitment were to tight for what I’m after, you’d end up having to run a high offset which might cause an issue with the wheels clearing the brembo brakes, that’s just an issue I didn’t want to potentially run in to… Generally if you fit a 18x8 et 30 wheel on a cossie that’ll give you a pretty decent fitment, iv not properly looked in to it with the 350 gear but I’d expect and 18x8 with the wider track would need something like a et40 or up to fit well…? That’s where the brake fitment issue might become apparent, unless you can offset the caliper and find a different disc to suit. 5x114 is a much better pcd for wheel choice though!

I think I saw a cool trick with a plasma cutter for getting clean circles.. Something like a plank of wood with two holes at each end. One hole for the cutter tip, the other hole with a bolt thru the wood and the metal as the centre point of the circle. Then just wizz the plasma cutter round like you did the protractor. Something like that lol

Love the project. Great watching you. Really very talented. It's the no1 thing to begin a sentence on KZbin - when showing welding 😂 80% of people 100% of the time give fabricators a hard time over welding. Imagine being out there trying to get things done - and everyone with a wife that won't let them or a mum that says no - sh*tting on people's work. The irony is never lost on me. I'm personally still putting things together with a flux core wondering what everyone in the comments is on about 😂😂 porosity and weak welds. M-f*ckers I built things in 1998 with a flux core for commercial purposes and it's still holding up. 😂

@Tdevil862 ай бұрын
@@julias-shed no, still the same old GoPro atm, apparently wiping the screen helps lol although the lense screen bit has seen better days now after having welding splatter hit it on numerous occasions 🤦🏼🤣 I did think about a bmw engine but they’re massive and would leave a great deal of room in the engine bay, the k20 should fit well though and is proven to give good bang for buck so hopefully my £50 engine will do me proud haha

11:19, those front trailing bushes [lolipop] don't look standard, usually pin is central in bush the reason they are made with the bolts at the side is that they had to snap off in a crash, so nailing to a tube is no bother for us boys plumbers are on a grand a day, so that's 5k you lost... keep it up young man...
@starfox_wr-45e933 ай бұрын
Good spot on the lolipop bushes. Those being offset leads to to believe this chassis was planned to be a drift car. Usually people put those in is to raise the caster over standard (M3 does come with offset bushing as std, as well as different geometry over base models.... I think).

Cor, I wish I was on a grand a day, I’d be able to buy a decent car if that was the case and not these rusty old turds lol But yeh, it’s had a few modifications on the bmw, the lollipops, extended lower arms and a solid steering column coupling, annoyingly it was missing the front anti rollbar though so il have to figure that out when I get to it although I imagine that’ll find its own place once things are fixed in place
