Yeah, there is no heckin' way that Dan (Yoshi) should have gotten second place. Luigi clearly had 2nd locked down. But the game was like, "I see what you're doing. The human players shall win first and second."

My best guess (although I also think it's bullshit and Luigi should have gotten second place) is that Boo's teleportation put his hitbox just at the finish line. From our perspective, Boo is barely not reaching it, but the game probably uses the shadow as the hitbox to use, and you can see that the shadow barely touches the line when Boo starts reappearing, a split second before Thwomp reaches the line himself.
