What is it called when the tug is heeled over, rail in the water, turning the ship? I built an RC tug, twin azipod drive, and while towing 300 pounds it has heeled over like that while trying to make a hard, relatively high speed turn. It's in no danger of capsizing, and it handles the turn beautifully, but I'd still like to know if that particular maneuver has a name. kzbin.info/www/bejne/m3rVkHuCfZmpjac

it's called indirect towing

@ziggydpop Thank you!! I have figured it out in the intervening years, but I still appreciate you taking the time to respond. And I still use this technique with my RC tug pulling me in my kayak. Tugboat Atlantic is on my KZbin if you're interested.

Hi Mark, We don't operate nor own tugs, but you can check with Kotug, operator of the RT Evolution via: www.kotug.com/en-GB/jobs/open-application/open-application-form-jobs-on-board-fleet/

Great boat handling. I would expect the emergency tripping mechanism to be tested under this load aswell.

The tow line is made up on the winch. There’s no hook to trip. The tow line and winch are rated for the manoeuvre. By design, namely the long moment arm between tow point, thrust point and centre of rotation, the tug is not in (much) danger of being capsized. 😳 I offer this post of the position being taken up ‘aggressively’ 😱 kzbin.info/www/bejne/bp2TgJ2XlNegZtUsi=H1H49PzWpB0Cfkxj

2:29 looks risky, the tug is heeling to much. I suggest that you try and get the towing line closer to the deck, by reducing the height of the A-stable. Ideally the vertical pipes in the A-stable should only be as high as the diameter of the towing line, so some 100 mm maybe.

Peter Jensen When the tug master deems the heel to be excessive he can simple reduce throttle on the forward thrusters to mitigate excessive heel. Alternatively the Rotortug enables you to operate in the combined arrest mode (direct mode operation at 6-10 kts). A Rotortug provides a tug master with options to work in a mode within his comfort zone.

The tug is designed to heel that far.We used to tow with a single prop and no fancy gear.Using a spring to control the tow rope.We used to heel sometimes more than this tug. Some schippers where better than others. This was Piet Smit in the sixties. These tugs look a so easy to manoeuvre in comparison with what we had.

Robert Allen designed indirect towage tug. Purposeful. No snag points. This guy knows what he is about. Can be done with normal ASD stern drives but need shorter towline for quicker response. I see no problems with these manoeuvres.
