The key point I heard is to catch the strings on all the notes with an intense vibrato. It makes the sound clear and echo. Well demonstrated, Professor Kolja Blacher!

The Ysaye Sonatas are all just NUTS...in a good way. They are freaking difficult too. I worked on this #4 for a bit but gave up on it. I learned #5 and 6. You have to think of them as "Ysaye's spoof on the 'other' 6 Sonatas (and Partitas) of Bach! Teaching them is kind of a moot point because for much of them, "anything goes." They totally lack the structure of Bach and they are very freeform. Many great violinists don't play them at all for that reason. The best way to learn them is to listen to a bunch of recordings of them and then develop what YOU want to do with them. Ordinarily listening to a ton of recordings of something is really bad and I wouldn't encourage it but for the Ysaye Sonatas, I'd say do it.
