My grandpa forged a knife when he was 35 years old. He recently passed away and he was 74 years old. He used that knife on just about every deer hunt from that point until his passing. He gave me this knife and I am making it my deer knife, but I would NEVER baton wood or beat on it. However I would definitely use this made in the USA, very high quality, lifetime warranty knife for anything that I have to do to survive. Great review and great knife.👍

Excellent review. The Esee 6 is one of my favorite blades and is my primary outdoors camp/hike blade. It does everything I need it to do and does it well. Stays sharp and comes back for more. If you are on the fence about this knife, just do it. It's a rugged companion for your camp.

I have a 4,5,6 and a Junglas. I love them all but to me the 6 is the best one knife only blade that ESEE makes. The 6 will keep you alive plain and simple. I usually when I'm on a kitchen sink trip take all my ESEEs and have a 5 and Junglas on my pack but on fast hikes the 4 and 6 are on my side. I find the 4 a great deer hunting blade and day hike knife but it's too small to do any work. The 5 is too heavy. The Junglas is like a Claymore Sword but it chops like a Granfors Bruks and the 6 just does everything I need in one sweet blade.. I own em all because I'm addicted to knives lol!

My 6 finally arrived. Thanks for a great review - top notch. I gotta say I enjoy your enthusiasm you have for what you are talking about. It definitely makes for a better vid, and you cover all the bases. I'll agree 100% about this being one of the absolute best blades you can get in this size class and return on cost. It is a perfect blade which comes as close as any other blade can for being a do-it-all knife because we all know that no one single knife is the answer to everything, but this sure comes real close....would even be a pleasure in the kitchen I bet.

Thx for the fast response! I'm familiar with the saber grind and that seems to be my only complaint on the 6, not enough 'meat' at the top, but still feel confident in it's strength. I'll still probably add a GSO to my expanding collection at some point, ha! Thanks again, love the reviews!

You do the absolute finest reviews on youtube.. I had a 4 (too small in the handle), I had a 5 and thought it was just too heavy for hiking when I factor in gun and magazines. Would you recommend the 6 or LS for stomping through the desert with 1 blade?

great review. i just got one. but, as personal preference, it would be perfect if balance of the knife is at the choil. it would maximize its chopping capability while being true to the purpose of the choil. small complain for a great knife. how is the balance compare to the bk7, because i think the bk series has skeletonized tangs?

@JoannaJedrzejczyksForehead
@JoannaJedrzejczyksForehead 10 жыл бұрын
In real work use, the material of the 6's sheath is better than kydex. It does not get as brittle in the cold. It is lighter, and the knife is quieter when drawn than it is from kydex. It I'd also less abrasive to knives than kydex is.

Finally time to pull the trigger on one of these in the venom color. Figured I should push back my Bradford Guardian 3 purchase for another month or two since the ESEE-6 is a bit cheaper to buy and probably more camp application for my needs. I had my Bark River Bravo 2 out last weekend, but it cost over $200 to buy and I ended up not wanting to wack on dead wood with it. I think I wouldn't mind beating on the ESEE-6 to warm me up. I have and love the DPx HEST Original to fill my smaller fixed blade needs (accompanied by Morakniv), and it is also made in Rowen, but I oddly haven't bought ESEE yet.

Good video: basic specs written out, blade tested, sheath advantages and deficits covered. I would mention the steel a bit more. It is very hard, yet it is prone to rust, which is an issue if used for extended times in the field. Easy enough to overcome though. Again, excellent, concise information.

Thoughts on pros and cons ESEE 6 VS ESEE 5? I went ahead and got the 5 a while back. I love the weight. It's at 16 ounces compared to the 6's 12. You can look up some more exact specs if you aren't familiar. But honestly, I can chop wood with this thing without using a baton to some degree. The wedging makes it somewhat axe-like. I can feather with it fairly well. As far as chopping/baton use, I can't decide if the extra length provides more power, or the weight/wedge on the 5... Experienced thoughts welcome. Thanks.

Hi gideonstactical huge fan of the videos! Just wondering which blade you think is better out of the esee 6 and or the ontario rat 7?
@gideonstactical
@gideonstactical 10 жыл бұрын
This is my recommendation. If you can get the RAT 7 for $85 or less and money is tight, the RAT 7 is a good blade & will last a lifetime, but for $120 at the-knife-connection.com you can get the ESEE 6. It is worth the extra money for the better sheath and F&F the ESEE 6 will give you if you have the extra $35.

Would u recommend the ESEE 6 over something similar such as the RAT 5? im looking for something that is good for batoning while still is easy for some more detailed work. do u feel that the longer blade of the ESEE 6 might make it harder to do detailed work or that it might be to heavy? i have also been looking at the ESEE 5, although i like the 1/4 inch blade i feel that it would be to heavy when it comes to more delicate stuff, plus the saber grind would make it harder to cut aswell which would wear my hand out pretty fast. Do u think that the weight, and saber grind might make it to hard to do the more detailed work with the ESEE 5? I am looking for a knife with a good middle size blade, flat grind, plain edge and preferably a plastic or kydex sheath over a nylon.

Say Heah Aaron, Seriously when I thinned down my Rodent 6 at the Busse Custom Shop and I had the top guard taken off. It became my ALL Time Fav. 6" blade. One of my Fav. Carries is either my 2Hawks Double Bit Hatchet or my 17" Hultafors Bruks Agdor Hatchet or either my Gransfors Bruks Small Forest Axe or even my 24" Council Wood Craft Pack Axe with the Heavy Duty Sheath and sling. Plus either my Silky Bigboy2000 or my Agawa Canyon 21 Boreal Saw which I think you should do a review on it. I have the Black on Yellow with the Crazy Horse Scabbard which houses my extra Aggressive Saw Blade. I have the All Purpose Saw Blade on it. I can sling carry it also. Oh, I also Neck Carry my Mora 510. Usually I go with my Kodiak Gearsling because I like its size. I also can attach some of my Smaller Hatchets like my G. B. or H. B. on some of my Cold Weather Solo Trips I also like my Rodent 7 and my Rodent 3 Piggyback which I Baldric Carry. Well that's it. Oh I also love my A-1 which I teamed with my H-1. I easily carry them side by side draw carry because of how the Sheath's are made. They fit together perfectly.,,. p

Excellent video!! ESEE 6 is an absolute wilderness survival king!! I am sure that reasonable minds could differ, but I would put the ESEE 6 up there with the Fallkniven A1 and Becker BK2 as the three best survival knives on the market, IMHO. I feel bad about not putting the ESEE 5 in there too, but I just think that the ESEE 6 and BK2 edge it out when it comes to traditional survival applications.

Hey buddy, I really respect your reviews. They're very honest, informative, and unbiased. I wondered if you know when the Esse 6 first became available in the U.S.A? I've been doing so much research into OKC, which has been quite difficult, but finding history information on Esse is proving extremely difficult. I've trawled through so many Knife forums, and i've only found slim pickens of info. Like Rowan, stayed working with OKC, after Jeff Randell's contract ran out. I've heard that OKC, after Rowen joined Esse, that OKC continued to use the same cryogenic heat treat? I've been unable to discern when the Rat 7 came out, and was in practicality, the template/inspiration, for the Esse 6, because of the Rat series being designed by Jeff Randell, and Ron Perrin. I'd really appreciate any information you can provide me with. Like i said, I really enjoy your reviews. I hope thete's plenty more to come! Thanks buddy

Hello Aaron, when I first was starting I inquired as to what blade lenght a good bush knife should be here's what my searche answer was I came up with 4"- 6 " I said that's easy so I got a 5" blade, which the Ratmandu is still one of my fav's but for a camp knife the 6" blade really shines like being a lite chopper and the extra realestate really helps out alot batoning, Mors Kochanski suggested that a knife should be strong so I searched for a strong knife but most looked too tactical and some had top and bottom gaurds and some were too thick for being a good slicer I wanted a strong steel like a 5160 but with more carbon and the Rodent 6 almost fit tge bill except it too was a bit too thick with a double gaurd, Swamp Rat has a Custom Shop so I asked them to thin my knife and take off the top gaurd off and now it look's like a beefy Ratmandu on steriods my favorite camp knife it slices pretty good, it's strong good steel and the saber vex grind makes it great to baton with, they did such a good job you can't tell it was a Rodent 6 the SR101 hold's an excellent edge too, and I always liked a choil especially on a larger knife but I like choil's period. Your Essee 6 look's alot like my Custom Rodent 6 so I know it's going to make a great camp knife, if Swamp Rat couldn't customize my Rodent 6 I most likely would get the Essee 6 I like my 5" blades ( and I have some nice 5" blades ) but for a all around camp knife a 6" blade shines.

As I am somewhat new to the bushcraft side of things, which would you recommend, the Esee 6 or the Tops BOB? I seem to think I want the larger blade of the Esee 6 but have been very impressed with some of the reviews/videos of the Tops BOB in action.

I love my ESEE6, but that would be a survival knife. It can do every task from batoning, chopping, cutting, and carving well. Were as the BOB is a bushcraft knife. It will do better then the ESEE6 at cutting and carving, but not at chopping and batoning. If you are looking for a knife to do it all, fire prep, shelter building, and carving go with the ESEE. If you are looking for a knife that is designed for the finer work, notching, food prep, carving, whittling, then go with the BOB. Hope that helps.

A 5.75 and a 6.5. which is the better one In your opinion and which is more practical for hunting/survival knife? I am very much enjoying watching your videos...from tactical gear, to packs and even survival/emergency packs. whoever has an opinion please reply. thanks in advance. I want to buy the esee 6 before the fall hunt

Say Heah Aaron, Everytime I see a Essee 6 video, I become mire grateful I had my Rodent 6 modified, It's defenetly my Fav. 6" blade (6 3/8"), But thinning it down and taking the top guard off, It looks like a Ratmandu on steriods, I really love my modified Rodent 6. But like my friends that have Essee 6's, I prolly would of get one too. ,, .

Say Heah Aaron, I was so worried I bought two knives I already had my Ratmandu and my Rodent Solution, I thought the new knives the Rodent 3 and the Rodent 5 would be reduntant, but actually to my suprise their not, we went out this weekend, so I can't use my batteries up, but my friend has a Essee 6, it sort of surprise me that the Rodent 5 is very similar, my other Swamp Rat Knives have palm swells, but the Rodent 5 doesnt, but the Lightning Bolt Handle is very comfortable, it too has a choil and my fav saber grind which I will convex, anyhow Thanx for this video, and making me aware of the similarity, even though my Rodent 5 is only a 5 1/2" blade it feels like a longer blade, the Rodent 3 is becoming my Fav. 3" blade, fills my hand great, and I wear a large glove Thanx again Aaron.

Say Heah Aaron, Not realizing at the time, I just realized how similar my knives to eachother, except a few, In the 6" category I have the modified Rodent 6 without the top guard, making it look like a Ratmandu on steroids and prolly my Fav. Then runner up for its strength my Fallkniven A - 1, Oh and my Njord, then my S. R. K., Benchmade 156 CSK, my black Bokor Rold and my Bokor Collection 2011, Puma Bowie 2 (440c), Gerber Silver Trident(double serrated), O. K. C. Gene SP-47, Bianchi Nighthawk 1, and the NV1-01 the Bianchi and the NV1-01 are Hollow Handle Survival Knives, I'll also include my Bark River Bravo 1.5 in 3V, And my newest W. C. Master Woodsman I'm having made in the CPM 154, Oh and my Busse Combat Green American Flag Cerakote ASH-1 Mag. and my S. R. K. San Mai 3. I might be missing a couple but these are right off the top of my head, Similar huh, and what do you think of my stable of 6" blades.

Great Video . What do you think of the ESEE 3 Mil Spec as a small fixed EDC blade. I just got a ESEE 3 5 and Tops BOB in the last few months . For 6 in blades I have a ZT 170 , SRK , Sog Force so Im not sure if a ESEE 6 is in the cards now because of those 3 .

Great collection. I love ESEE my problem with the ESEE3, ESEE4, and Laser Strike is the finger choil. You do not need a choil in my opinion till the cutting edge goes past 5inches, then it become very helpful. On the smaller designs I think it becomes a hindrances. So, I would take the TOPS Scandi Trekker, BK14, BK24, or Izula II before I would use an ESEE3. The ESEE6 is my all time favorite blade.

Ok I went and bought an ESEE 6 from Knifeworks about 15 minutes ago. Great service! They already got it ready to ship and its the even before Christmas Eve. I selected the ESEE-6 over the TOPS Silent Hero. The ESEE-6 is about half the price of the Hero comes with a more durable sheath and a life-time warranty. Since knives are an addiction for me like many of you I'll probably get the Hero in a couple months.

@gideonstactical
@gideonstactical 10 жыл бұрын
I will not at this time because my RAT 7 is on loan to a buddy. This is my recommendation. If you can get the RAT 7 for $85 or less and money is tight, the RAT 7 is a good blade & will last a lifetime, but for $120 at the-knife-connection.com you can get the ESEE 6. It is worth the extra money for the better sheath and F&F the ESEE 6 will give you if you have the extra $35.

you should do a vs. video between the ontario rat 7 and the esee 6. i cant decide, rat 7 is nice but i like the esee 6 sheath but in canada theres about an $80 difference in price so im kinda of torn between, because the rat 7 has a bit of a longer blade and apparently feels more blocky in the hand and i dont really like the nylon sheathe, maybe you can give me some advice?

That knife can do chopping with and other bushcraft tasks and is a knife one should have since it is the right size and not too heavy. I would take it with me and be glad to have it. I have some knives in that category which I have and love them due to the way they are built and the abuse they can take.

The Becker is a far better blade. ESEE has a name for themselves because people don't do their research. Why have a 1095 blade that you have to sharpen all the time and the steel is pliable when you can have a 1095 cro-van blade that has been put through the most rigorous abuse and laughs at the ESEE lineup? Just saying: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eJCQd3anls9npcU
