Glad you pointed out how the CM6 doesn’t have enough of a finger guard for hard stabbing tasks. To this day, it’s the only knife I own that has “bitten” me (sliced open my finger). I removed the last screw and put a lanyard through it and now it feels rock solid when using it. Now I like using it for a lightweight backpacking/bushcrafting blade in the woods.

That's damn tough for 1095. Really surprised it didn't break sooner based on previous 1095 performance. Although, some of the Ka-Bars did really well also. I've been debating which steel to use for my knife that I'm designing, and I'm stuck between AUS-8, and 1095. But I'm also considering 1075 and 5160 spring steel for toughness. Might even end up with 7Cr17MoV or 8cr13mov which are generally underrated and can be quite tough.

In my last comment about the SR101 steel knife, I mentioned that equivalent or better performance could be had in a less expensive knife. Well, I think the ESEE at half the price (or less) is a good example. Of course, old faithful 1095 steel is always a good performer. There are good reasons why 1095 is used to make so many very good knives. It would be interesting to compare the ESEE 4 in S35V against the ESEE 4 in 1095. (Perhaps the ESEE4 is too small for Joe to test). We know that S35v will be much more rust resistant. But you can take care of 1095 and not worry too much about it. However, how much better will S35v be in Joe's torture-abuse tests? 1095 might surprise a lot of people. Don't seriously cut yourself Joe. As much swinging, pounding, bending, chopping, and stabbing that you do, it's only a matter of time.

Thank you for the test Joe! Micarta scales are meh. It is really just glorified hardened cardboard basically (no really). I love how you use your various shovels for tripods, they are great little helpers. I also have a test subject suggestion. Could you test a Soviet AK bayonet please? They are fairly cheap and readily available. Multiple models where produced since the 50s. It would be interesting to see how it holds up. The vast majority of them where made of stainless steel. Which is surprising because most of the issued knives around the world in the cold war where still being made of carbon steel.

I think it makes a nice camp and hunting knife. And it seems to do light bushcrafting and pathfinder stuff. I like that it puts function over hype optics that fuck up the hands. For a middle aged hiker, it should last for the rest of the life.
