The mill I work in looked similar to this back nearly 10 yrs ago (150T EAF/Ladle Furnace/6 Strand Caster) when freshly built. A few weeks melting and casting will sort this mill out lol.

In a steel plant, what's the intermediate stage between pouring and extruding? Or is it cast into the billets before hot forming? I understand that the crucibles must be coated with ceramic or some sort of earthy material, which is fine when it's just liquid steel in a pot... But, how are the machines prevented from melting?

We were the best and knew it, OSHA, EPA and our own greed broke the camel's back! When they can ship it from places half way around the world, with no gov interference and sell it cheaper than we can make it, with more profit, the fat lady was just warmin up! Rat's on a sinking ship! Sure didn't take long for it to become a great pile of slag!

Yeah, new manufacturing is like this in the our country too. I did electrical work in a few older manufacturing plants and it was the same story. New machines in old buildings with clues to the number of people that worked there like giant loccer rooms, restrooms, stairwells, but nobody around except 2 for 3 guys in a control room. Some even have black and white pictures in hallways and offices of thousands of workers doing the jobs that were once done manually and are now done automatically. Those days are long, long gone.
